Season 38 - Who made the 1/8 finals and more (24/07/2008 21:23)
Managerleague
Champions League

1/8 finals

16 teams managed to come through from the group stage and only one of them was out of the 12 brand new teams in the competition. Out from my own predictions before the competiton started i managed to get 10 out of 16 teams correct which i'm pretty satisfied with knowing that many managers are on vacations. Lets see if can get the 1/8 finals just as good

All the teams were written on small notes and put inside their special little ball before one and one were drawn to match up the first knock-out stage matches. The outcome were as follow.

HOME
AWAY
Bavaria Bulldogs Alex Perfect Elleven
DINAMO 13 Real Boludos
CDEstarreja Holland 1 - A-tack
CzarneKoszule Royals
Manch United Reservoir Dogs
SC Heerenveen Petlan
Papillary Carcinoma Milky Way
NikeNike Skjoldar

As many of you might already noticed, many of the biggest favourites to win the whole competition are already out after the group stage. Teams like Ringnesklanen, Hogwarts of Wizardry, Spurred On and more failed to get through from their groups and only have the league and league cup left to get some trophies this season. That said, I just must say. All of the teams coming this far totally deserve it. They're all magnificent teams with great managers, but the hard part starts now. It's no longer possible to get back in the competition if the another match is lost. Only one of the past champions league winners are still in the competition so there is a very big chance that we get another new competition winner this season. Lets take a look at each of the matches.

Bavaria Bulldogs - Alex Perfect Elleven

Both teams only lost 1 match in the group stage against the group winner. They score quite a lot of goals so we can expect a match with a lot of goals. The strikers will decide the result in this match for sure. Alex strikers have scored a total of 19 goals in his 7 CL matches, while Bavaria strikers have netted a total of 17 goals.
My tip: 3-2 in favour of Alex Perfect Elleven

Dinamo13 - Real Boludos

This one is gonna be a real firework of a match. Both teams have scored a lot of goals and have only drawn one match in the group stage. They have also only let in 8 goals each on the 7 group stage matches. Maybe one of the goalies will have an outstanding match and save the day.
My tip: 3-1 in favour of Real Boludos

CDEstarreja - Holland 1 - A-tack

Holland 1 - A-tack is the team that have let in fewest goals so far in the competition with a total of 6. He doesn't score so much though which can become his big weakness this season, although his main attacker have scored 15 of 24 goals so far in the competition. CDEstarreja have the current top goalscorer in the competition which have scored 16 goals. Can he score the goals he need against last season champion or will A-tack's goalie keep another cleen sheet?
My tip: 3-0 in favour of Hollan
d 1 - A-tack

CzarneKoszule - Royals

CzarneKoszule are one out of three teams that managed to win all their group stage games and will be a huge favourite in this 1/8 final. Royals lost 2 matches and drew 1. He also let in a total of 20 goals. I believe CzarneKoszule will get enough of chances to put in enough goals to get through to the next stage in this game.
My tip:  3-2 in favour of CzarneKoszule a.e.t. (2-2 full time)

Manch United - Reservoir Dogs

Probably the biggest match in this knock-out stage with two of the favourites to win the whole competition. Manch United walked through his group with 7 wins, but he only have +12 goal difference. Reservoir Dogs on the other hand have +15 goals with both a loss and a draw. He both score more and let in less then Manch United, but all matches live their own life.
My tip: 3-3, Manch United will win on penalties

SC Heerenveen - Petlan

Petlan is the last team that have won all his matches in the group stage, but i'm afraid that's goint to hit the breaks now. SC Heerenveen have an amazing squad, but have let in more then 2 goals per match in average.
My tip: 4-2 in favour of Petlan, but this match can hit both ways

Papillary Carcinoma - Milky Way

Papillary Carcinoma is the biggest surprise of them all. He's the only team that participate in the competition for the first time that actually managed to get throug to the final 16. He should not be too happy with his draw though. Milky Way won his group in front of both Skjoldar and Ringnesklanen and he scores a lot of goals in the process. His two strikers have alone score 26 goals so far in the competition.
My tip: 4-0 in favour of Milky Way

NikeNike - Skjoldar

NikeNike is the only team that have not logged in the last 24 hours. I can not confirm if he's on vacation at the moment. Skjoldar will have a huge advantage if NikeNike will stay offline when it comes to making the right tactics and formation. Maybe skjoldar will get to his first 1/4 finals in this competition.
My tip: 3-1 in favour of Skjoldar

Champions League

Introduction
Hello everyone. I've had this idea since our beloved Spinner implemented Champions League into the game. I'm making my blog towards a MLCL "newspaper", at least i will try as good as i can. Don't expect this big entries like this one every single season as I've just got a new job and starts tomorrow. My plan is not to just come with precompetition predictions, but i've also planned to do some reports in the middle of the competition and on occations i will make entries involving 1 match alone both before and after it's played. I have made this small little function to pick out a match for me when i feel like it, so the matches will not be picked by me. This is because no teams should be more in the publisity as long as they're still in it.

As i said i've had this idea since Spinner implemented the competition, so i've also prepared since then. I've made my own little database which contains every single CL result since season 35. This is to be able to give some historical views on situations i will drop by the coming seasons, like checking past results between two teams. I hope you all will enjoy to have a little bit more publisity around Managerleagues biggest cup. Good luck to you all!

History

The Champions League competition in Managerleague is going into ti's fourth season since the implementation in season 35.
Tore Pupper, manager of Ringnesklanen, wrote history when he became the first ever manager to win the competition with a comfortable 3-1 win in the final over Deportivo Quito The very next season he was the first ever manager to participate in 2 finals when he in the end lost against the Hogwarts of Wizardry who also beated Ringnesklanen in the group stage the very same season.

In season 37 Rachael, manager of Holland 1 - A-tack, managed to become the first ever team to win the treble which included the champions league, the holland league cup and the holland division 1. This is the ultimate achievement and Rachael can be very proud of himself and his boys too manage this.

Sir_Selstø, manager of ManUtd123, did also write himself into the history books in season 37 when he beated Poker Alho with 10-0. This is the first time a team have ever scored 10 goals or more in a champions league match and also the biggest win. It will be a hard result to beat for sure.

Season 38

The coming champions league competition can become the season where an underdog wins the whole competition as many of the mayor teams are going into vacation the coming weeks. This means that some of the biggest favourites might go out in the group stage and that can open the door for some of the 12 teams that participate in the competition for the first time. I will go through every single group a little bit and also share some information i've gotten from participating teams through small interviews. The big question this season is if Holland 1 - A-tack can win for the second time in a row or if there is any teams out there that can stop him. When it comes to the interviews i have not bothered to rewrite the answers if the english is a bit bad as they all were understandeble.

Interview with TanTheMan United
(He's from Drammen, Norway)

Q: This is your first time participating in Champions League. What are your ambitions?
A: Since I wont be online during the first 2 weeks of the new season, I cant have any ambitions in CL this season... My holiday starts tomorrow, and ML wont come along

Q: I see that you were the lucky manager to buy the former goalie of Hogwarts of Wizardry. How much influence do you believe he will have on your team this season?
A: Hopefully he will help me get 1 or 3 points out of the even matches. Last season I lost most of those matches because my goalie wasnt very good. So when I noticed Hogwarts were selling, I just had to buy him. I will now have a great goalie for at least 10 seasons. He should also have great experience after winning the league a few times + the MLCL, so I am very pleased having this player now

Q: None of the teams in your group have ever played in the 1/8 finals, so if i said you're one of the favourites to go through from the group, would you agree?
A: Yes, absolutely, but since I will be away I cant agree. I need some luck to manage to enter the final 16.

Q: which two teams do you believe will go through from your group?
A: I would love to say my own team, but honestly I think NIkeNike and Papillary Carcinoma will go through from our group.

Q: Last but not least, who is your favourite to win the whole competition this season?
A: This season I really HOPE Mr Jolly G Reaper with his Spurred On wins it! He has a great team, and is a very nice person. But I THINK Skjoldar will end up as winners

Q: If there's anything you would like to add besides the questions, feel free to do so.
A: Just want to thank Spinner for making this great addicting game, haha! And of course thanks to all managers that have helped me out with tips and so. You know who you are!

Favourites: NikeNike and TanTheMan United
Outsiders: RO Forza Ragazzi and Papillary Carcinoma

Q: You have participated in MLCL all the seasons so far, but only reached the 1/8 finals once. Do you think you can repeat that this season?
A: I have been participating MLCL from the beginning but not have achieved anything so far. I really want to improve there because in the league there are not too many teams to be match to me.

Q: What's your total ambition for champions league this season, how far can you go?
A: I want to win it of course but it seems to me impossible because too better teams than mine. if i reach 1/4 finals or 1/2 finals it will be great achievement for me.

Q: You're the only team in your group to ever reach the 1/8 finals. Do you think that experience will help you, and why?
A: I think that my experience is valuable but the other teams are good enough so it will be tough.

Q: which two teams do you believe will go through from your group?
A: I hope i will be 1 of the teams the other cant say. May be Kingstonian or Man Untd.

Q: Last but not least, who is your favourite to win the whole competition this season?
A: I really think That Holland 1 is the best team i have ever seen in ML and the best manager ofcourse. Ringnesklanen and all champions of major leagues like Norway england and Holland have chances too.

Q: If there's anything you would like to add besides the questions, feel free to do so.
A: I am sorry for Hogwarts of wizardy for going in Norway league so he cant play next 4 Seasons.
Interview with SC Heerenveen

Q: This is your third time participating in Champions League. You have never been in the 1/8 finals, but this season you're the group favourite. How does that make you feel?
A: favourite ? thats nice ,but i dont believe in favourites teams because i have see bots teams win strong teams , but i feel very hapy.

Q: What's your ambition for champions league this season, do you think you can go all the way?
A: i hope i can get 1/4 is not to much but is my dream.

Q: There's a total of 12 new teams that haven't participated in MLCL earlier seasons, three of these teams are in your group. Do you see that as an advantage or not and why do you think that?
A: no i dont think so , because any weak want to win from strong teams , i have respect for any team , i think they want to go next round to.

Q: which two teams do you believe will go through from your group?
A: i dont know because we are 5 strong teams ( Manch U. , Agorreta FC , SS Lazio , De Tamilske Tigrene ) , but my favourite strong team is Manch U.

Q: Last but not least, who is your favourite to win the whole competition this season?

Q: What's your ambition for champions league this season?
A: advance to knock out stage and then all is possible

Q: You seem to lack some power up front. Are you planning on spending some money on a new attacker, or do you feel your current attackers have what it takes?
A: i'm not planning to spend any more money on attackers in nearest seasons. I believe my attackers just need some time

Q: which two teams do you believe will go through from your group?
A: CzarneKoszule and Panjevi

Q: Last but not least, who is your favourite to win the whole competition this season?

Q: You have participated in MLCL all the seasons so far, but never reached the 1/8 finals. Do you think you will manage that this season?
A: It depends of what are my priority. It's very hard to play good in both tournaments, you should have balanced team. I steel don't have it(short of midfielders). Also it depends of which League you are! If you have a lot of good teams like International League You can just go down!

Q: What's your total ambition for champions league this season, how far can you go?
A: I'll try my best to go to elimination phase this season!

Q: Dimitar Berbatov seems to be very important for you to succeed. Do you believe you have good enough cover for him if he should get injured?
A: If It's happen then I'll think. He was injured last season at last rounds and I manage to win my games even with one of the best teams Manch United.

Q: Back in season 36 you went all the way and beated Ringnesklanen in the final. Do you think you can repeat that this season?
A: I'm away the entire season, so i doubt i can repeat it with out coaching the team from the sideline.

Q: You sold many of your best players last season, including on of the best goalies in ML when looking at his skills. Does this mean you don't have any big ambitions for MLCL this season?
A: That's correct. I'm actually trying to sell out most of my team at the moment, so i don't have any ambitions for MLCL at all.

Q: Even though you sold all these players, you're still the favourte to win your group. Do you feel so as well?
A: Absolutely not! As i just said, I'm still selling players and will not be online this season. Any team can go through from my group.

Q: Back in season 35 you went all the way and beated Deportivo Quito in the final and the following season you lost the final. Do you think you can repeat that this season?
A: No, don't think so. Have been replacing the CL-winning players with younger and more unexperienced players, so my goal is to go through to the knock-out stage this season.

Q: For the first time since the Champions League started the groups are drawn randomly. What do you think about that? Is your group easier or harder this season then the other seasons?
A: What do you think? All CL-champions so far have come from my group. All groups seem more fair this season.

Q: Rune Hvattum is pretty important for your attack line to score goals. Do you feel you have good enough back up in case he should get injured in key matches?
A: Easy answer: No.

Q: which two teams do you believe will go through from your group?
A: Skjoldar, offcourse. The rest of us have to fight for 2. place.

Q: Last but not least, who is your favourite to win the whole competition this season?
A: Holland 1 - A-tack, Hogwarts of Wizardry, Skjoldar and Spurred On.

Q: If there's anything you would like to add besides the questions, feel free to do so.
A: Nothing much. I Like the new random draw for groups
Interview with Skjoldar

Q: The two seasons you have participated in MLCL you have won all 7 matches in the group stage just to lose in the 1/8 finals. Is it the pressure that gets to big at once you're in a knock-out stage?
A: Last season I got knocked out in 1/8 finales, against Nikki sixx. What can I say not the typical cup team I guess.

Q: Do you believe you can get further this season?
A: I guess if i get the right teams in knockout stage I hope to get top 4 maby a final, thats the goal but not sure if it is possible.

Q: It's pretty clear that you have one of the best squads on the paper in the competition this season, so i guess you have high ambitions for both CL and the league?
A: My goal is ofc to win all 3 titles this seson, just like it was last season. At one point last season I did not think that I would win anything, but managed to win the league on most scored goals...

Q: which two teams do you believe will go through from your group?
A: Me and Tore i guess. I have never lost a group stage game yet, but Tore might be the one to do so.

Q: Last but not least, who is your favourite to win the whole competition this season?
A: Holland 1 - A-tack, Spurred On, think those teams will be up high, and hopefully Skjoldar, but i will probarbly get knocket out like last season.

A: Yes, I will be very dissapointed if i fail to go through again.........

Q: Getting to the 1/2 final in season 35 is your best achievment yet in this competition. What's your ambition this season?
A: Hope for a place among the 4 or 8 best

Q: There are 12 teams that compete in MLCL for the first time this season. Do you think this can be a season where an outsider wins it all?

A: Fystor was very strong last season. So i guess me and Fystor

Q: Last but not least, who is your favourite to win the whole competition this season?

Q: Last season you wrote history in ML by winning MLCL, 1. div in the holland league and the holland league cup. Do you believe any team, including yourself, can copy that achievement in the near future?
A: I still find it unbelievable I have managed it all the way. There are many more very good teams who should be able to copy this achievement but I think it will take some time before someone will. I think you also have to be a little bit lucky with your matches so to achieve this all pieces have to fall together. It would be nice if my achievement would be historical for a little while.

Q: You have a really strong first lineup, do you feel you have good enough backup if you should get injuries or suspensions in key matches in MLCL this season?
A: Yes I think my team is in balance; a good first line up, some good players for backup and most important also some nice youth players so I can continue with my team in the future. There is one other "problem", I will have vacation for 4 weeks so I won't be much online. I don't think I will achieve prices in season 38.

Q: What is your ambition for this season Champions League?
A: Like I said above I don't have very much ambitions for season 38. Let's see how my boys can manage without me. If I qualify anyway for the CL in season 39 then my ambition will be once again to win this title for the second time.

Q: which two teams do you believe will go through from your group?
A: Finally Lardonio I hope, he has been unlucky last seasons but is a good manager. The other team will be Royals I think but like all seasons most of the teams have a good chance to qualify for the next round so it will be though.

Q: Last but not least, who is your favourite to win the whole competition this season?
A: I have two favorites for this season. PlayRoy and Kaiser Soze. I know my mate (Reservoir Dogs) is very determined to go all the way. He is a good manager, has a great team so he should be able to do it. I only can wish him and everybody who play this game good luck in season 38. I can tell now that it is a great feeling to win the CL....so I will be back

Q: Your squad have good competition in every section. Do you feel yourself that you have good enough backup in case of injuries and suspensions?
A: I am a little short in attack but hope that my experianced striker K.Leonidas can lead the way for me.

Q: So far you have gone through the group stage every single season and are the big favourite in your own group this season. What is your own expectations?
A: I am a quarter final team, have never gone further, but to be in the top 8 teams in ML is an achievement in my opinion. A semi final spot would be great but as ever, getting past the Group stage is the prmary aim.

Q: Your group seem to be one of the easiest groups there is. 4 of your competitors have their first season in the competition this season. Do you think this is an advantage compared to the other favourites to win the final?
A: There are no easy groups and if I were to suggest so it would be more than a little disrespectful to the other Group members. Luck as much as experiance, will determine who progresses.

Q: which two teams do you believe will go through from your group?
A: Alex Perfect Eleven and Real Boludos

Q: Last but not least, who is your favourite to win the whole competition this season?
A: I think Ringnesklanen given his pedigree with 2 trophies in CL from 3 seasons and as an outside bet, Skjoldar, both in a tough Group. (My dear friend, Ringnesklanen only have 1 CL trophy)

Q: If there's anything you would like to add besides the questions, feel free to do so.
A: Best of luck to all this seasons competitors, but not against me of course.

Final words

As you all can see several of the teams are going on holiday this season which will mean we most likely will get a brand new Champions League winner. Ringnesklanen don't believe he have the squad to take the title this season. Hogwarts of Wizardry are going on holiday for the entire season as well as selling his players. While Holland 1 - A-tack also are going on holiday for 4 weeks. This means that anyone participating in CL this season will have a good shot at the title if they're home in the summer.

If I should pick out a couple of favourites I would say either Skjoldar, Reservoir Dogs or Spurred On takes the title this season. Never the less, we do have to keep in mind all the other challengers like Manch United, CDEtarreja, CzarneKoszule and DINAMO 13. Every single one of them will make it hard for the favourites to win their matches and advance towards the final.

Stay tuned through the competition and I'll bring you all more news around Champions League the coming days.

This all the team logos for the division 1 teams, only 1 team do not have a team logo and that is Stovner Massive. Hopefully for him that will not have any affect when his team are going out against all the other teams this season.

I have sendt a mail to every single manager in div 1 to find out about their goals for the season and who they think will end up in the top 3 section. In this post i will give out some regular facts that you all can find out about them if you bothered. I'm also gonna spoil what they all tipped for the top 3 positions. Last but not least i'm gonna try to predict how the table will look like when the season is over.
What i will not spoil to the public is what the managers goal for the season was, as I see this as "confidential" information.

As you can see i have been looking pretty good on every single team. All the info you can see up here are based on the pre-season. There might happen more transfers after I picked up all my info about the teams. Actions like that will have to become some of my predictions and therefor you might see some table predictions below that doesn't make to much sense from what I've written above.
The prediction is also made in the hopes that Krogzar, manager of Heracle Almelo change minds and do not quit playing the game.

For a little comment before the prediction i just woul like to say that this probably will be one of the closest season in history of ML. Making this prediction was really hard. There's only a couple of teams left now that have a little bit to bad team to actually compete in the division. In a couple of seasons it will probably become almost impossible to predict anything in the top division as the lower quality teams are gaining pretty fast on the big clubs.

The club in my heart (08/11/2006 09:35)

I have a little favour asking you all.

In Norway there’s just now a voting called “The club in your heart”. Everyone can vote for what ever Norwegian club they like, but can only give one vote to a club from the same ip-address, but you can vote for as many clubs you want from the same ip. Just no double votes! (from same ip that is)

So my question to you all is simple. I wonder if you could help my floorball team to give a good competition in our class/group in the competition. We’re competing in the class against other clubs with 100 or fever members. If we should be so lucky to grab first or second spot we will get 25.000 or 10.000 Norwegian kroner.

Anyone can vote on this, you don’t need to be Norwegian at all. You don’t even need to have any favourite Norwegian clubs. I hope you all can give us this little help to actually make a good competition. I even hope you other Norwegians can take this little time of your life to put in a vote for my club. If there’s a specific club you want me to vote for as well, just make a comment with the desired club name you want me to vote on.
Yes Spinner, I'll even vote for your Vålerenga if you want me to. Just don’t forget to vote on my floorball team.

The only thing you need to do is to follow the link below, type in the antibot code you see on the picture and hit enter. The club name is already filled in, so no need to worry about that.

Vote here (btw webvictim, this is the link)

Thnx for the support in advance

Keiko, the savior (20/09/2006 11:27)

As you might remember from my former blogs, my norwegian team, Viking FK, haven't done all to good this season. This have might come to an end.

Tom Prahl, a swedish sleepyhead, with what should be great tactical knowledge ended up putting this great team into the relegation section. After 19 matches with the record 4 wins, 5 draws and 10 loses Viking FK's board finally made the dicision to throw Tom Prahl in the mud. For my own record i can't believe a top division team can hire a manager looking as drowsy as he do. Take a look for yourself.

With this sleepy head as a team leader your subordinates, the players, are bond to skip some work and lose their matches. Worst thing is that doesn't only look drowsy, but he didn't do anything from the sideline to push his players to the edge. I don't think i need to speak to much more about it, the record speaks for itself. He was another flop for Viking FK.

The good thing is that Viking FK already have hired a new manager for their team. The very same day as the sack Tom Prahl they travelled down south to Kristiansand where they had a meeting with the newly sacke Start manager well known as Keiko.

This a manager with great abbilities and he's forcing his players to play 110% at all time. He's record is very impressive although he got sacked from Start the fans down there woreship him. He's was first known as a manager taking Odd Grenland into the norwegian Tippeliga several season ago. After that he switched club and took over Vålerenga when they played in division 1. Also this resulted in a promotion the very next season. Then in 2004 he took over the helmet in Start, also this a division 1 team. He promoted to the top division in the first seasaon and last season (2005) he lead his team to an impressive second place in their first season in the top flight, only beaten by Vålerenga. I'll show you a picture here of how a manager should look like.

His real name is Tom Nordlie and have managed Viking FK for about 1 week and a couple of days now. He lead the team from the sideline for the first tim on sunday, when we played home against Stabæk. For the record, Stabæk got the deadliest attacker combination in the league. Veigar Pall Gunnarsson (12 goals) and Daniel Nannskog (11 goals) have both scored more goals then any other player from other teams. I mention this just to explain how difficult task Keiko was up against.

The match was for once pretty even and Viking came to some really good chances. Never the less, in the 63rd minute it all became very dark as Stabæk scored on a corner and took the lead, 0-1. Jus a minute later Viking's Øyvind Svenning was down with something that looked like a serious neck injury. Medic's came running onto the pitch and put on a headrest before carrying him off the pitch with a stretcher. Birkir Bjanason replaced Svenning on the right flank. Just a couple of minutes later another player got carried of the pitch on a stretcher with a head injury. This time it was one of the Stabæk defenders, something that later on would look to have great impact on the final result.
When the game finally got back into play Viking started to create several big opportuneties. Peter Ijeh nodded the ball over from about 1 yard from the goal line. It seemed like tha ball just was against us today at that moment, but 4 minutes later we got our equaliser after Stabæks goalie gave a rebound on a freekick and Peter Ijeh came first to the lose ball and had an easy job to put the ball into the open goal. From here on and in it was all about viking. Within the next 10 minutes they scored another 2 goals and won the match 3-1. It should be mentioned that the match had 8 minutes of extra time because of both the two serious injuries.

Yesterday came the other good news when the hospital reported that there were now serious damage on Svenning's neck and he can get back on the trainingfield the coming week. It looks like all the bad luck we have had turned into good luck after getting Tom "Keiko" Nordlie as manager. Now there remain 6 matches to be played before the season ends and Viking are second to last, only 1 point behind a playoff spot and 2 points behind a safe spot.

Their upcoming match is away against Sandefjord who is only 2 points ahead of Viking. If we win that match we'll end up on either a playoff match or a secure spot. What ever is good, we just need to concentrate through the match so we wont lose the match. It's a so called 6 point match that can bring towards a new contract in the top flight.

All hail Keiko, the savior!

Champions league

Earlier today the Champion League group stage got drawn without Juventus as participating team. To make the group stage draw in Champions League all the teams are divided into 4 different levels. To make a group there will be drawn 1 team from each level to the same Group. So this basically means that you can't mean any teams that are ranked on the same level as your own team. Here's a list of how the groups looks like after the draw was done.

Group A Group B
Group C
Group D
Barcelona (lvl 1)
Chelsea (lvl 2)
Werder Bremen (lvl 3)
Levski Sofia (lvl 4)
Inter (lvl 1)
Bayern München (lvl 2)
Sporting Lisboa (lvl 3)
Spartak Moskva (lvl 4)
Liverpool (lvl 1)
PSV Eindhoven (lvl 2)
Bordeaux (lvl 3)
Galatasaray (lvl 4)
Valencia (lvl 1)
Roma (lvl 2)
Olympiakos (lvl 3)
Shaktar Donetsk (lvl 4)
Group E
Group F
Group G
Group H
Real Madrid (lvl 1)
Lyon (lvl 2)
Steaua Bucuresti (lvl 3)
Dinamo Kiev (lvl 4)
Manchester United (lvl 1)
Celtic (lvl 2)
Benfica (lvl 3)
FC København (lvl 4)
Arsenal (lvl 1)
Porto (lvl 2)
CSKA Moskva (lvl 3)
Hamburg (lvl 4)
Milan (lvl 1)
Lille (lvl 2)
AEK (lvl 3)
Anderlecht (lvl 4)

Group A:
Last season champions Barcelona and Chelsea are clearly the favourites in my opinion to go through from this group. Werder Bremen is a good outsider that can become a surprise in the 1/8 finals. Levski Sofia is also a quite strong team and hard to beat at their home field.

Group B:
Inter and Bayern Munchen is my favourites to go through to the next stage of the tournament in this group, although neither Sporting Lisboa or Spartak Moskva are going to give up without a fight. Getting full pots at home will can become vital for both Inter and Bayern munchen.

Group C:
A fairly even group with Liverpool a lightly head in front of the other teams. PSV Eindhoven also have a strong side but never excellerating in eruopean tournaments. Bordeaux aint famous for their big battles in Europe either and is from my eye the worst team in the group. Galatasaray is, with Hakan Sukur on the team, my secon favourite to go through from this group together with Liverpool.

Group D:
This is probably the hardest group of them all this season where all the teams gotta rely on getting their points at home and hopefully get a win or some draws away. The teams to fulfill both these requests will go through from this group. Valencia and Roma as the favourites to do so, but Olympiakos with Rivaldo and Co wont bend over before they're out of the tournament. Shaktar Donetsk will do their best to make the other teams suffer and maybe we'll see a few acrobathic celebrations, that's if Julius Aghahowa are getting some goals in this group.

Groupd E:
Real Madrid and Lyon are big favourites, but the team from Ukraine (Dynamo Kiev) have yet again been able to get out a pretty strong side with their home coming son, Sergey Reborv playing for the team again. Last time that happend he was a part of one of the deadliest striker partnerships in Europe when he played together with Shevchenko back in the 90's. Staua Bucuresti will also make their trademarks when playing at their homefield.

Group F:
Manchester United are the big, big favourites in this group, while Celtic and Benfica will battle out for the second place. FC Copenhagen will be the big outsiders with nothing to lose. They're known for their hard work and never giving up a match before the refree blow his whistle for the last time in the match. My bet will go on Benfica to follow Manchester United to the 1/8 finals.

Group G:
Arsenal sail out to be big favourites to win the group, but the likes of Porto and Hamburg wont make it all to easy for them. They're both great respected teams in Europe and will make it hard for Arsenal to even get their victory home on their new stadium. CSKA Moskwa have also made their way to the champions league as the usually do.

Group H:
This is probably the group with the biggest favourite to get past the group stage. Milan have, on paper, what would be seen as the easiest group this season although all the other three teams are well respected teams in their home country they're getting a couple of numbers to small when facing Milan. It's hard to predict a runnerup in this group, but i would have to go for AEK.

So that was a little walkthrough on what you could expect from this autumn. I'll get back with more prediction round by round for this tournament later on.

My teams

Viking FK:
As you maybe remember from my last blog entry they aint doing to well this season and they haven't gotten any better yet. At least not in front of goal. Last weekend they played home against Rosenborg in the Cup. In the first half they outplayed Rosenborg with every single note in the books. They came around on the wings, they managed to get throughballs in the middle, closing down on the opponents half making them lose the ball and muc much more. They actually created 5 big chances in the first half and Rosenborg only created 1, BUT! Rosenborg scored on their only chance and were leading 1-0 at half time.
In the second half they were more even and created 3 good scoring chances each. Rosenborg scored twice, while Viking only scored 1 and ended up losing 3-1 so they're now out of the cup as well as second to last in the league. Hopefully the can keep up the good work on the field and the scoring will come eventually, at least that's what i hope on.
Last match: Viking Rosenborg 1-3 (cup)
Next match: Viking - Vålerenga (league) Sun 27/8 17:00 GMT

Newcastle United:
Glenn Roeder have finally managed to snatch up the player he think can fulfille the gaps after the retirement of old skipper alan Shearer. To do so he had to look to Italy and Inter Milan where he found the 22 year old Nigerian national player, Obafemi Martins. A powerful, very quick and talented player. Together with Ameobi on the top i think this can become one of the deadliest striker partnerships in Premier League this season. This is the big signing he have been looking for all season. he have also tried to get Dirk Kuyt, but never placed a bid on him even when Liverpool snatched him up. Maybe he even got a couple of more trumph cards up his sleeve before the transfer deadline is over. If he does i sure hope it's a defender that's kinda simulare to Jonathan Woodgate. At least a lad that open his mouth and guides his fellow defenders to the best position. They truly needs that to become one of the top 5 clubs in England again.
Last match: Newcastle - Wigan 2-1 (league)
Next match: Newcastle - Ventspils (UEFA Cup) Thu 24/8 19:45 GMT

Cheltenham:
After getting a terrific start to the season and beating both swansea away and Tranmere at home they suffer 2 defeats in the hands of
Port Vale (0-1) at home and Bournemouth (1-2) away. Else there's mostly good news as midfielder Mickey Bell played 60 minuted for the reserves and seem to be recovering pretty good from his injury and the 2-1 win home against Bristol City in the Carling Cup first round. the second round  draw will be made on saturday.
Last match: Cheltenham - Bristol City 2-1 (Carling Cup)
Next match: Cheltenham -  Millwall (league) Sat. 26/8 15:00 GMT

Don't forget the small teams! (08/08/2006 21:09)

For most people the new football season starts 19th August 12:45 GMT when Premier League is opened with the match between Sheffield United and Liverpool at Bramall Lane. Sheffield United are playing their first Premier League match since the crucial match against Chelseas back in the 1993/94 season when they got relegated with the last kick off the season. Now they're back to give a good fight for a new Barclay Premiership contract in mid may.

If we go back about 1½ month, more spesific, 17th of June. On this date we will find my start of the season. The Intertoto first round got played. No big names on the fixture list, but the likes of Tampere (Finland), Kalmar (Sweden), Maribor (Slovenia) and Dinamo Tbilisi (Georgia) all are good teams from their respective countries that had to play through the first Intertoto round. Except for Maribor all got through to the next round with a total 8-1 aggreagate from both home and away match. Maribor won with a total of 8-0.

1st of July, the second round of the Intertoto cup is played. Still not many people think about it at all though. Teams like Lillestrøm (Norway), Grasshoppers (Switzerland), OB (Denmark), Hibernian (Scotland) and Moskva (Russia) all enter the cup in this round. They're all well respected teams in the European cups, but still many haven't heard about them.

15th July is a more known date for any football lover, although it's the final and last round in the Intertoto cup which will provide the winner on aggreagate after 2 matches a spot  in the UEFA Cup. All the teams from the large leagues in Europe play only this last match. Marseille (France), Auxerre (France), Twente (Holland), Villareal (Spain), Hertha Berlin (Germany), AA Gent (Belgium) and my favorite team Newcastle Unite (England) all enter in this last round. It's kinda weird that many football lovers only associate this one match with the UEFA Intertoto Cup. Of course it's because all the big names first come into the cup in this round, but how did they all do. For instance Marseille barely got through because of the away goal rule. Newcastle played 1-1 in their first lege at home when they faced Lillestrøm, but managed to get an easy 3-0 away victory in the second leg. Also Hertha Berlin drew the first leg at home, but won their away match 2-0 to claim their UEFA Cup spot. The biggest surprise of them all was our little team from Slovenia, Maribor. Remember, they had to play the first round when they won 8-0, in the second round they won 4-1. In the third and last round they met last a year semifinalist Villareal from Spain and won 3-2 on aggregate.

So when do your new football season start? If you're Norwegian you might say that it started back at 9th april. Or you're more the classic European that says it starts when the Barclay Premiership kicks off 19th august. Anyway, here's a little list of happenings. You might find out that your not as big football fan as you tought you were.

Chilean Apertura 28th January
Peruian Apertura 4th Feruary
Copa Libertadores 2nd March
Japanese J-League 5th March
Ireland Eircom League 10th March
Russian Vischaya League 18th March
Swedish Allsvenskan 1st April                        (I don't see this as the season start, just like an appetizer for what's coming)
Norwegian Tippeligaen 9th April                     (Same as allsvenskan)
Brasilian Campeonato 15th April
Finnish Veikkaus 19th April                              (Same as above)
FIFA World Cup 2006 Germany 9th June      (Still not the start for me, more like ending of the last season)
UEFA Intertoto Cup 1st round 17th June       (This is were it all starts for me. Teams playing for spot in the UEFA Cup)
UEFA Intertoto Cup 2nd round 1st July
UEFA Intertoto Cup 3rd round 15th June
Osterreich T-Mob. Bundesliga 18th July
Danish SAS-Ligaen 19th July
Switzerland Super League 19th July
Ukrainien 1. div 21st July
Ungarien Borsodi Liga 28th July
Czechian Gambrinus League 29th July
Scottish Premier League 29th July
Turkish Turkcell Super Ligi 4th August
Argentinian Apertura 5th August
French Le Championat 5th August
English Lower divisions 5th August
Mexican Apertura 6th August
German 1. Bundesliga 11th August
Polish 1. div 11th August
Netherland Eredivise 18th August
English Premier League 19th August
Greece 1. div 19th August
Spanish Primera Division 27th August

The Italien Serie A is likely to be delayed so the starting date is uncertain. This is due to known "cheating" issues that were revealed in the end of last season.
Also the Portugese schedual is not made public yet for some reason. Last season they started 21st august, so i have no freaking idea why it aint published already.

If anyone should happen to miss Chilean Clausura, Pruian Clausura, Mexican Clausura and Argentinian Clausura i haven't put them into the list because it's kinda the second half of the season. They use 2 tables in thos countries. 1 for the first secion and another for the last section of matches played.

My teams

This entry will kinda be a double entry insted of making 2. Through out this season i will share my ups and downs in the global football society. I know the downs will come and might not share them at aonce it happen cause i can get kinda depressed when my team aint doing what they're supposed to do, win their matches of course.

First of all I'm Norwegian so i have my Norwegian team to follow. The team in my city is in the highest division, Tippeligaen, so it's pretty normal to follow that team with your heart and i'm one of those. The big problem is that they haven't done so well this season. Something that makes me very sad. The team is called Viking FK. There's already played 16 out of 24 matches total in Tippeligaen and Viking have only managed to 4 matches, 5 draws and 7 loses. The little bright part in the whoole picture is that the league is unbeliveble close this season. From 5th place to 13th place there is only a 5 point difference. Viking is currently placed 11th on goal difference. The team have been a disgrace all season only scoring a total of 14 goals. That's below 1 goal each match. If they can't get their act together soon i'm afrwaid they're gonna demote which would been aweful. This actually something i wont talk any more about at the moment, i'm just getting depressed, so lets move on to more happier moments so far.

Yes, Newcastle United have already made me a happy person. First of all they have signed Damien Duff for the coming season. They're also looking for new attacker that cantake over for a long term injured Michael Owen. I actually don't knkow if that's the biggest issue as they have Shola Ameobi who i think will be a great star if he just get the chance as first attacker insted of the one doing the job for the other attacker. He got great talent, but I wouldn't mind another great striker in the squad though. As it is just now they only got 3 strikers, Ameobi, Luque and Milner. Hopefully they'll get some new faces before the transfer window closes. This is not the only way Newcastle have made me happy so far though, as you probably got from the first part they claimed their victory with a 4-1 aggregate against the Norwegian team Lillestrøm in the UEFA Intertoto Cup third round. This gave them a spot in the UEFA Cup where they have drawn the Latvian team FK Ventspils to play in the first leg. A match that sounds like a walkover to most football interested people, but they are unbeaten in the league this season and just suffered their first loss since october 2005. So far this seeason they have 12 wins and 4 draws in the league. Newcastle will play the first leg away wich will be a mayor advantage as they can get a feeling on the opponent before making their tactics and pressure for the home match. First leg being played on thursday 10th august.
The first league match gonna be played at St. James Park against Wigan. A match Newcastle won 3-1 last season after 2 goals from retired Alan Shearer and 1 goal from Titus Bramble. Hopefully they can make the history repeat itself, except someone else then Shearer need to put the goals this time.

Hmm, who's logo is this you might think. Well, this is a team i've fancied since around 97/98 season. I discovered them when they played in the English Conference league. that's the lowest professional league in england for thos who haven't heard of it. Or as i like to call it, the connection league between amateur and professional. Last season they played in English 2nd division and promoted through playoff, beating Grimsby in the final. That was the best part of the entire last season for me. It was incredible feeling. So now they're playing division 1 football.
The first match was played on saturday (5th august) away against Swansea. An opponent who got beaten in the playoff final for division 1 last season. They came 5th in the league last season and was mayor favourites against Cheltenham. Cheltenham manager, John Ward, made an experience lineup and put his two speedy winger Ashley Vincent and main striker Steven Gillespie on the bench. Gillespie only started on the bench because of an injury. Also Shane Duff was injured, but played the first 45 minutes of the match. Cheltenham managed to hold bck the big Swansea pressure in the first half and the score was 0-0 at that time. In the start of the second half Cheltenham actually put themself 1-0 ahead after a counter attack and just minutes later increased the lead to 2-0. Swansea had to push more forward and cheltenham almost got their 3rd goal not long after, but didn't manage to put it. 10 minutes from time swansea reduced the lead to 2-1 which became the final result. Cheltenham won their important first match of the season and are placed 4th in the league after 1 match played. The second match got started 20 minutes ago. It's being played at home on Whaddon Road against Tranmere. This time Cheltenham is the favourite.
Current score, Cheltneham - Tranmere 1-0. Odejayi scored his second goal of the season. Wohooooo, it looks like i'm gonna be a happy man to deal with on the chat tonight.

Don't forget about your team just because they're doing bad, cause that's when they need you the most!

Tips about prematch preparation in ML (Part 2) (12/07/2006 19:01)
WARNING ::
This blog entry was written 12 July 2006. There have been a lot of twakes and updates to the game since then, so some of the info you read here might be a bit old and out of date. - Gizmo
WARNING ::

Last week, in part 1, I made a blog about reading and understanding a match report for your own advantage. I also showed one of my most used events that you can't see in the match report. So when ever you read a match report you need to have an open mind and not just throw out that margin win is a fluke. Try to find a "hidden" event that might have changed the picture of the match.
Remember, "hidden" events contain changes on shooting, tackling and/or playstyle.

In this part i'm gonna write about the formations, tactics and picking your lineup. Much of this info will be basics for many managers, but when managers come to me and ask for an opinion many questions seem to go around from manager to manager. "How do you know what position your player gets on the field?" seem to be one of the most common questions. Thsi and maybe many more basic questions you might have can be answeared in this blog. If there's still something you wonder about don't be afraid to ask, either as a comment to the blog or you can send me a message on either the portal or ingame.

Formations and their structure:

I've made some pictures of all the formations so you can see how they look like and where your players gonna end up on the pitch. When you know the structure of the formations you might manage to make your lineup more powerful even though you're using the exact same players, but I'll get back to that later on. First i'm just putting out some small thoughts and info about the 11 formations availeble at the moment.

5-4-1: This is a very defencive formation, but can also be very effective. The formation needs a good attacker up front to score the goals for you. Your defence don't need to be the best since you have 5 defenders in the back line.
Playstyle: Continental should be the best one. Mixed can work, but not recommended. Longball is just plain stupidity.

Recommended use: Against teams with better average quality, where a draw would almost be the same as a victory for your team. Specially strong against formations with low amount of midfielders.

5-3-2: Concentrates a bit more on scoring goals, but is still a defensive formation. Watch out for teams with good midfield. You might lose because you aint getting your midfielders into the game.
Playstyle: Mixed should work best for this formation, continental comes in second and longball works a bit better in this formation then in the 5-4-1 since you got 2 attackers to aim the ball for insted of one.

Recommended use:
Away matches where your opponent is about the same average Quality as you or at home against better teams then you.

4-5-1: Again a defensive formation. Compared to the 5-4-1 formation this is more voulnerable to opponents playing longball or mixed cause they play over your midfield so you will lose lots of defensive power. You defence need to be stronger and your attacker still needs to be good.
Playstyle: Continental should by far the best option. Mixed aint recommended as you there is to many midfielders to not use them. Longball is out of the option.

Recommended use:
Against other manager playing continental with low a low amount of midfielders. Make also sure that their attackers aint too good.

4-4-2: Most common formation used in the real life worl today. It have both good amounts of defenders, midfielders and attackers. When it comes to this game you wont see many managers in div 1 or 2 use this formation. Mostly because they find other formations to be better.
Playstyle: All three playstyles work, but i would recommend mixed or continental a bit more then longball.

Recommended use: When you aint finding any other formations that works well this is the one to use in most if the times. More rcommended against defensive formations (above formations) then attacking formations.

4-3-3: An attacking formation that concentrates your play in front of the opponents goal to win the match. Voulnerable against teams with many midfielders.
Playstyle: Mixed and longball should be about the same. Continental is not recommended.

Recommended use: Can be used against any formation, but your decision of playstyle can be the reason why you either win or lose. If you have low amount of good mifielders and many good attackers this could be the formation for you.

4-2-4: An all out attack formation that only hopes it get more goals then the opponent. Very voulnerable to teams playing mixed or continental.
Playstyle: Longball is almost the only formation to recommend as the formation only contain 2 midfielders. Mixed could maybe work but not recommended while continental is the same as digging yourself 7 feet under.

Recommended use: A large amount of good attackers is important for this formation. Also your defence and goalie needs to be excellent to win you matches. There aint many teams in divison 1 that could pull this one off. Don't use it just to try it.

3-6-1: This a kinda odd formation in my head when thinking about real life. How would it actually be to play in a midfield as crowded as this one? Luckily this aint real life (remember that Woijteker). Normally i would say a formation with only 3 defenders is an attacking formation, but this only contain 1 attacker so it can't be that attacking.
Playstyle: I can't see any other then continental work in this one. Maybe mixed can work a little bit, but what is a lonely striker gonna do with a longball?

Recommended use: Well, although not all formations with only 3 defenders are attacking i would still recommend training up the offside-trap before using the formation. Never the less, it can still be used against teams playing mixed with a low rate of midifelders.

3-5-2: Yet again an attacking formation that needs excellent defenders to not let in to many goals. Voulnerable against teams playing longball with many attackers. For instance 4-3-3.
Playstyle:
I would prefer mixed in this formation. Continental is of course good as well because the amount of midfielders, but since there's only 3 defenders they might get pushed by the attackers a bit much if playing continental so a couple of longballs every now and then won't hurt.

Recommended use: It's time to train your offside stat in the team training section cause playing the offside trap can help you a great deal with this formation. Also recommended against teams playing either mixed or continental with low amount of midfielders.

3-4-3: This is a deadly attacking formation, when it works that is. The bad part is that your opponent can easily find ways to beat it. Speaking from my own experiences, I have yet to produce a win with this formation. On the other hand i produce a smile every time i see that my opponent either change to this formation with an event or use it from start.
Playstyle: As i have no good experiences of own use with this formation i'm not to sure about the playstyle. But from my knowledge about formations and tactics i would say that any playstyle can work in this formation. Continental probably the worst choice.

Recommended use: Choose another formation is my recommendation, but of course if it works good for you, why not keep at it. Your defence need to be in very good shape compared to your opponent attackers. Also you goalie will probably get a lot to do. Again, good offside stat in team training is your friend.

3-3-4: The last formation is again an all out attack formation, just like the 4-2-4 formation. Remember that all these formation very voulnerable in defence so pick them with coution, not just pick to try. There are smarter offensive formations to choose.
Playstyle:
Longball is the best playstyle again, while mixed should work a bit better with this formation. Continental is again to dig yourself 7 feet under with this formation.

Recommended use: Against other all out attack formation and you got the best average quality this could be a choice. In other situations than that i wouldn't recommend to use such a formation.

Picking your formation:

Everyone got their own way to pick their formation for a match. I'm gonna tell you the way i feel is best and also mention a mathematic way to decide which formation should be best. Of course mathematics might help you more in a computer game like this then it would in real life.

When i pick formation i always check what playstyle my oppoent use first. This is because playstyle can turn a match completely and you from my own experience the different playstyle options seem to work in a triangle.
Mixed seem to beat longball, longball seems to beat continental and continental seems to beat mixed.

1) So when i pick my formation i try to find out what playstyle my opponent gonna use by reading their match reports. From what they're gonna play i choose what playstyle i'm gonna use (see the triangle i mentioned above).

2) When i've decided my playstyle find the formations best suitable for that playstyle.

3) When i have a couple of formations suitable for my picked playstyle I check which formations are most suitable for my players.

My last point before choosing my formation contains some mathematics. Most times you would end up with the same choice you feel are best. At least I do. so to try explaining my mathematics in choosing formation i'll give an example.

Lets say your opponent use a regular 4-4-2 formation and you wanna find out which formation of 4-3-3 or 5-3-2 is the best suitable.
The way to do this is to divide defenders against attacker, middies against middies and attacker against defenders. After that you add all of them together so the formation getting the highest score is the best suitable. So lets check it out.

4-3-3 against 4-4-2:
Dividing your defenders against opponent attackers: 4/2 -> 8/4
Dividing your midfielders against opponent midfielders: 3/4
Dividing your attackers against opponent defenders: 3/4
Adding them together: 8/4 + 3/4 + 3/4 = 14/4

5-3-2 against 4-4-2:
Dividing your defenders against opponent attackers: 5/2 -> 10/4
Dividing your midfielders against opponent midfielders: 3/4
Dividing your attackers against opponent defenders: 2/4
Adding them together: 10/4 + 3/4 + 2/4 = 15/4

As you can see the result is marginal, but it reveals 5-3-2 as the best formation of the two to use in this situation. If you didn't understand what to do there is nothing to worry about. Youd should do finw with just the 3 first steps alone if you choose to try my way.

Lineup:

This is just gonna be basics for how to pick which player to what jersey number. Yet again lets use 4-4-2 as an example.
If you click the link you see the structure of the formation.

#1 is the goalie -- Your best goalie should play here, DuH!
---------------------------------------------
#2 is the left back  -- One of your two best passing defenders should play here. Also speed is important in this position
#3 is the left central defender -- One of your 2 best defenders beside #2 and #5 should play here. If #2 have worse speed then #5, then #3 should have better speed then #4
#4 is the right central defender -- The other of your 2 best defenders beside #2 and #5 should play here. If #5 have worse speed then #2, then #4 should have better speed then #3
#5 is the right back -- The other of your two best passing defenders should play here. Also speed is important in this position
---------------------------------------------
#6 is the left winger -- One of your two best passing midfielders should play here. If #2 have better passing then #5, then also #6 should have better passing then #9
#7 is the left central midfielder -- One of your 2 best midfielders beside #6 and #9 should play here. If #6 have worse speed then #9, then #7 should have better speed then #8
#8 is the right central midfielder -- The other of your 2 best midfielders beside #6 and #9 should play here. If #9 have worse speed then #6, then #8 should have better speed then #7
#9 is the right winger -- The other of your two best passing midfielders should play here. If #5 have better passing then #2, then also #9 should have better passing then #6
---------------------------------------------
#10 is the left attacker -- One of your two best attackers should play here. If #6 have better passing then #9, then #10 should have better shooting then #11
#11 is the right attacker -- The other of your two best attackers should play here. If #9 have better passing then #6, then #11 should have better shooting then #10

This lineup structure puts your best passers in every section on the sides because it's easier for your backs to pass to your wingers then it's for your central defenders to pass to your central midfielders. also your wingers produce more assists then your central midfielders. So the better passing they have the more goals you'll score, hopefully!

Do you have 3 middies with the same passing skill? then put the one with best shooting or best tackling into the center. The central midfielders are more likely to score goals then the wingers.

Tactics:

This should be quite simple and i guess most of you already know what to do on most of the tactics options, but I'll take my time and explain them anyway.

Captain: The best captains are usually 27 years or older and they should have good perception. Your captain also gives a little boost to the section he's playing in. So if you for some reason feel either you defence or midfield aint good enough for your upcoming match you should pick your captin to play in this section. So if your captain plays in defence your defence will get a minor boos and play better then they would have done.

Freekick, own half: This is mor simple, just put your best passing defender to take these freekicks.

Freekick, opponent half: For these freekicks you should pick a midfielder with both good passing and shooting. If the same player also got good perception it's a postive thing as he would know better when to shoot and when to pass/cross.

Corner: Your midfielder with the best passing should be taking these.

Penlty kick: Your best shooting attacker should be taking these. Also perception is good for penalties.

Playstyle: You have 3 playstyles to choose from, continental, mixed and longball. Continental passing keeps the ball mostly to the ground and play through the midfield. Works best if you have many midfielders. Longball speaks for it self. the passes is in the air and with a distance. Best with many attackers and less midfielders. Mixed also speaks for itself. Your team try to play both continental and longball at the same time so your opponent won read you all to easy.

Tackling: Your 3 options is Soft, Normal and Hard. With soft you'll lose more important tackles, but you'll keep the fouls low and suspension is rare. With normal you'll win a bit more important tackles but both injuries and suspensions more likely to happen. With Hard it again increase the chance of injuries and suspensions.

Shooting: Again there is 3 options to choose from. Shoot at will, near goal and only when safe. Shoot at will gives you more shots, but they're more likely to not hit the goal as your players will shoot from where ever they want. Near goal makes it more likely to actually score on your shots, but both shots on target and shots total might decrease. the last option, only when safe, again decrease your chances as you won't fire a shot before you feel absolutly sure you're hitting the goal. The good part is that usually about 90% of these shots ends up as a goal.

Pressure: All three options speaks for itself. Attacking should be played mostly at home and against teams with lower or same average quakity as your lineup. Normal means that you play neither defending or attacking. Can be played in any match, although usually attacking or defending is more suitable. Can be first when you play away against teams with same or lower average quality then your lineup. Defending should not be played at home, at least that is my opinion. I'll explain why afterwards. Defending shold only be used away and against teams with the same or higher average quality then your own lineup.

Offside: You can either chose to play the offside trap or not to play the offside trap. If you play a formation with 3 defenders they're more likely to have a good offside trap then a formation with 5 defenders. The less defenders, the easier to communicate. Before you play the offside trap you should also train your offside skill in the team training section.

Home matches against away matches:

Home: You should play either attacking or normal pressure because when you play at home you're getting a little boost just for playing at home. If you have bought your under soil heating in the stadium section this will also give you a small boost since you have perfect pitch all season. Both these 2 advantages should be enough to play attacking at home and put the pressure on your opponent even though your opponent might have a better average quality in his team.

Away: Away you should be more careful about playing attacking because of the same reasons mentioned above. Only play attacking if you're average quality is much better then your opponent and you feel certain to win. Else you shold choose between either Normal or Defending.

The World Cup Final (09/07/2006 17:41)

vs

The 2006 World Cup have given Europe their 9th world title. This means, when the judge blow his whistle for the last time tonight Europe will draw level with South America. Both continents will then have 9 world titles. This is not something new in the history though, cause only twice in the history have teams from the same continent won two consecutive FIFA World Cups; Italy in 1934 and 1938, and Brazil in 1958 and 1962. Also notice that the World Cup have been held on European land 10 times, where only 1 time a team from South America have won (Brazil 1958 in sweden). So basically, Europe have never won the World Cup in any other continents. While South American teams on the other hand have won at least 1 title in all the continents the World Cup have been hosted; 4 in South America - 3 in North America - 1 in Asia - 1 in Europe.

Ronaldo the diver:

Ronaldo have been criticized a lot for diving to much in this World Cup. Specially after the group stage. We saw it against Holland, England, France and Germany. The worst one maybe against France just after the magician, Zizou, had teleported his penalty into the net behind Ricardo in the Portugal goal. I could practically see the springboard hidden in the pitch as he flew through the air just like superman after running between two french defenders. Luckily none of the judges got fooled by him, but he's not alone in the cheating section.
Both Italy and France are topping an unofficial statistics made by an english software-company, IBI. Italy coming out on top with a total of 32 incidents so far this World Cup where they have either fooled or tried to fool the judge. France is second with 28 incidents but they're topping their statistics on complaints to the refree.
So i gotta ask; is this how the future of football gonna be? Is "Gods hand" gonna be the essential of football?
Lets hope not! The judges gotta pay more attention to diving and hand out cards on it. This way we might get our belowed game back and once again get to see the attacking teams back in the top.

So basically what we want to see is; joy, hope, passion, celebrating, team hold, supporters. It's the game called Football...

European soil, Italy unbeatable?

Tonight Italy's goalie, Gianluca Buffon, can go into the World Cup history and become the most prolific keeper ever played. Since he last let in a goal when
Cristian Zaccardo scored an own goal in the 27th minute group stage match against USA, Buffon have kept a clean sheet for 453 minutes putting him fifth in the all-time ranking for unbeaten goalkeepers.
Another Italien, Walter Zenga, holds the current record with 517 minutes unbeaten record in 1990.

Italy can also grow one of their current records further tonight. As long as they aint getting beaten by the French before a penalty shoot out the Italien team have gone 25 World Cup matches unbeaten on European soil. Last loss came against Poland in Germany 1974 when they got beaten 2-1 in the last group stage match sending them out ofthe tournament.

Ten good reasons why we'll win!

Italy

France

- Because, for many of the Italian players, Germany 2006 represents a last chance to win a major title with the Azzurri. After all, the likes of Fabio Cannavaro, Francesco Totti, Filippo Inzaghi and Alessandro Del Piero are not getting any younger. - Because France have not lost to Italy since 1978.
- Because the Italians’ motivation is massive after 28 years without a win over the French. - Because this Final is the farewell party of Zidane, Thuram, Claude Makelele and possibly other French players, so defeat would be unthinkable.
- Because the Italian players know many of the French players inside out after having played against them repeatedly in Serie A or the UEFA Champions League. - Because Les Bleus' route through the tournament (victory against Spain and Portugal, Final against Italy) is uncannily similar to their UEFA EURO 2000 trajectory.
- Because Italian confidence levels are sky-high after the victory over their German hosts. - Because the Italians were taken to extra time in the semi-final and must therefore be more tired than the French.
- Because Italy are the most solid team in the tournament, especially in defence (just one goal conceded, and an own goal at that). - Because of Zidane.
- Because Gennaro Gattuso is perhaps the only midfield enforcer in the world capable of keeping the brilliant Zinedine Zidane quiet. - Because France have never lost a major tournament final.
- Because Lilian Thuram has himself said that Italy have been the best team at the tournament. - Because Del Piero has himself said that France are the favourites.
- Because France are the oldest side in the tournament and must therefore be tired after having played six games. - Because having beaten the world champions and hot favourites Brazil, Les Bleus’ self-belief is unshakeable.
- Because the scandal currently rocking Italian football is strangely reminiscent of the one that shook Calcio just before the Azzurri's triumph at Spain 82. - Because Patrick Vieira and Makelele form what is arguably the best defensive midfield pairing at this FIFA World Cup.
- Because whoever is involved, a FIFA World Cup Final invariably turns on a simple twist of fate. - Because whoever is involved, a FIFA World Cup Final invariably turns on a simple twist of fate.

The Golden Ball award:

The Golden Ball is awarded to the player who have been most important to their team through out he whole tournament. Unlike the Golden Shoe award the Golden Ball award have only been around since the 1982 World Cup in Spain when the italian striker Paolo Rossi became the first player to ever win the award. He also won the Golden Shoe award the same tournament with his 6 goals. 2 times have the award been given out to a player not playing for the tournament winners. Salvatore Schillaci in 1990 for Italy who came third in the tournament and Oliver Kahn in 2002 for Germany who got beaten 2-0 by brazil in the final despite Ronaldo scoring 8 goals throughout the tournament for the champions.

In tonights match 7 players are nominated. 4 Italien players and 3 French players, also 2 Germans (Ballack and Klose) and 1 Portugese (Maniche) are nominated for the award.
Italy: Gianlugi Buffon (
182406 votes so far), Andrea Pirlo (110292 votes so far), Fabio Cannavaro (17076 so far) and Gianluca Zambrotta (1399 votes so far).
France: Zinedine Zidane (49989 votes so far), Thierry Henry (5508 votes so far) and Patrick Vieira (2312 votes so far)

My toughts before the match:

So this is it, the last match of the World Cup 2006.Sorry folks, I know there's plenty people out there that would love to see the tournament go on and on and on with beautiful football. Unfortunately football players need vacation too, although the don't deserve it because "I want to see more!"

Well, there's nothing to do about that. For tonights match I expect Italy to go out and attack to push the French team back which will give France good opportunities to counter-attack. This might give Henry the place he needs to get the 2 inches he needs, at least as long as he aint going into offside. Henry is the most fouling player so far in this tournament with his total of 17 fouls commited in France's 6 matches played. Italy's striker, Luca Toni, on the other hand is on top when it comes to receive fouls with the total of 23.

This is a match that can go either way. France haven't lost against Italy since 1978 and never lost a big tournament final. Italy on the other hand is the slighty favourites due to being extrodinary organized and deadly in front of goal. the likes of Fabien "slippery hands" Barthez in the French goal wont make their supporters tremble less when ever Italy makes a shot. A stupid rebound is all Luca Toni needs to put the ball into the net. Hopefully a stupid rebound wont be what decides the winner.

Players to hopefully shine:
Andrea Pirlo
Gianluca Buffon
Fabio Cannavaro
Thierry Henry
Zinedine Zidane
Lilian Thuram

Possible substitution heros:
Filippo Inzaghi
Alberto Gilardino
Davide Trezeguet

If i have to give out a tip today i would say 1-0 to Italy, but anything can happen with these kinda players on the pitch.

Final word:

I just wanted to make my final words in this blog go to Zinedine 'Zizou' Zidane. One of the best footballers ever played this game. May his talent grow into a player who has all his career in front of him.

We'll miss you on the pitch!

Previous bronze finals:

Germany:
German teams have appeared three times in the match battling for the third place. First time was in second World Cup in 1934 when Italy were the hosts. Germany lost their semi-final against
Czechoslovakia 3-1 and ended met Austria, who lost to Italy in the semi-final, in the bronze final. The german side opened with a shocker and Ernest Lehner put his side 1-0 up in the first minute. Edmund Conen scored in the 27th minute to increase the lead to 2-0 but Austria striked back in the very next minute. Ernest Lehner scored his second an last goal just before the half-time break. Germany won the match 3-2 in the end after Austria had gotten their second goal 9 minutes into the second half.

Did you know?
Italy won this tournament after needing a rematch against Spain in the quarter-final. First match ended 1-1 a.e.t. and the second one Italy won 1-0. Both matches played at Giovanni Berta. Italy went on to win the tournament  with a 2-1 win (a.e.t) over Czechoslovakia in the final. Former World Cup champions, Uruguay, did not participate.

In 1958 Germany lost 3-1 against the hosts, Sweden, in the semi-final. In the bronze final they faced France on the opposite half. It took 16 minutes before France opened the score and took the lead 1-0, but Germany striked back just 2 minutes later. Many would probably think that the last 70 minutes of the match would end up kinda boring with, but specially France had other intentions. They scored twice more before the half-time break and had a good 3-1 lead as they walked onto the pitch for the second half to start. Germany managed to score 2 goals in the last 45 minutes, but that didn't help at all. France, with Just Fontaine leading on, scored 3 goals more to win the match 6-3. Just Fontaine scored 4 goals in this match.

Did you know?
Just Fontaine is the all time scorer when counting 1 World Cup alone? He scored 13 of Frances total of 23 goals in this particular World Cup. 7 goals more then the legendary brazilian player, Pele (17 yrs old at the time), scored.

Germany faced their third loss in a semi-final in Mexico 1970. This time against Italy, same nation as they lost to in the semi-final 4 days ago. This match is one of the most historical matches ever played in a World Cup. The german player, Karl-Heinz Schnellinger scored a 90th minute goal with the last kick on the ball about 3 minutes into the overtime. Italy ended up winning winning the match 4-3 after 2 stunishing extra time halfs. Italy went on to lose against Brazil in the final while Germany faced Uruguay in the bronze final. They won the match 1-0 after a goal by Wolfgang Overath in the 26th minute.

Did you know?
Gerd "Der Bomber" Mueller got the Golden Shoe. He scored remarkeble 10 of  his 14 World Cup goals in this particular World Cup. Only Ronaldo (15) have scored more goals total during World Cup tournaments.

Portugal:
Played there only Bronze final until now in England 1966. They got beaten 2-1 by England in the semi-final. The opponent in the bronze final was former Soviet Union. A match that should be extremely exiting for the supporters on both sides. Eusebio opened the score line with a penalty kick only 12 minutes into the match. Soviet struck back in the dying minutes of the first half. Edouard Malofeiev scored the equalizing goal. Only 1 minute before full time Torres became the Portugal hero when he scored the winning goal. Portugal had taken their first and only medal so far in the World Cup hostory.

Did you know?
The well known Portgual player, Eusebio, is originally from Mozambique. He scored 41 goals in 64 apperances for the national  team. 9 of them got scored in the 1966 World Cup when he got the Golden Shoe.

My own thoughts and prediction for the match:

Germany got lots of changes in their lineup for tonights match. Kahn coming in for Lehmann, Huth coming in for Mertesacker, Jansen coming in for Friedrich and last Kehl coming in for Ballack. This probably cause some rocations like Philip Lahm playing right back since Marcell Jansen is left back only and Thorstein Frings will get a more attacking role with Kehl taking his usual part in the team.

Portugal have also had to make som rocations. Nuno Valente and Ricardo Costa replacing Miguel and Ricardo Carvalho in the back line. Also Figo have been put on the sideline from the start when he's playing his last match for the national side. Simao Sabrosa comes in to take his place.

For tonights match i believe Portugals midfield gonna take control of the match. Deco will attack the space between the defenders and midfielders while Maniche and Costhina gonna take care of Thorstein Frings.

Duels to watch;
Christiano Ronaldo vs Marcell Jansen
Simao Sabrosa vs Phillip Lahm
Nuno Valente vs Miroslav Klose
Paulo Ferreira vs Bastian Schweinsteiger

My tip for the match might please Spinner tonight. Portugal will win 2-1. Goals scored by Figo and Ronaldo. Podolski will score for Germany as the portugese defence will concentrate to much on Klose.

Tips about prematch preparation in ML (Part 1) (07/07/2006 17:31)

Well, as you see this is something I'll make as a series. This is because teaching away parts of this stuff with be to much to read in 1 blog entry. Specially this part is stuff you might not be good at right away, but i'm gonna try to explain it all as easy as possible with a spesific example from one of my matches this season. In this part 1 i will not only talk about the power of reading your next opponents match reports, but i'll try to show you how to fully understand things that might seem as a fluke, just like this match report might would look like for you before reading this blog entry. Before i start i'll just hand out a little basic.

  1. Always read all match reports from your meatings against your next opponent. Not including friendlies though, cause people play defenders in goal and many other stupid things.
  2.  Always read the the match reports from your opponents last 5 matches.
  3. If your opponent have won all 5 last matches, go to your department result section and dig up match reports from when he have either lost or drew. If you don't know where to find your department results for every team and round in your department,  here's the location. Data -> League Results -> Department Results. Here you can navigate through every single round and look up the match reports you want to read.
  4. If you opponent haven't lost yet you just need to read as many reports as it takes before you find your best suitable tactics.
okey, moving on to the real deal.

Part 1: Reading and understanding your opponent match reports.

This might sound very simple as i know most people only scroll down to the statistic page and then compares shots on target, freekicks, corners and ofc the formations played. They make a small conclusion about the formation worked or didn't work. Lets give a little visual example on this so it gets easier to both explain the issue and understrand the issue.

Lets say i'm your opponent and one of my match statistics gives you this;

I'm the away team using 5-4-1, longball, defending. Yes, this is an actual match report from season 11, i've just cut the lineups as they're not that important at the moment. Anyway, most people would say that the 4-3-3, mixed, defending formation certainly doesn't work since i won. Other people would say i just got lucky, but they leave it with that insted of trying to find out WHY i was lucky. As you all can see my opponent had 2 shots mor on goal then me, so lets read the match report to find out more. Like in this example we wanna find out a couple of things.

1) Was it my goalie that had a great game or was it the attackers from Team Magic that had a lousy day at work?
2) Noticed i had a penalty? Or did you only check the formation and shots on goal? Lets see how that penaty ended.
3) What about my goals. Were thwy all great efforts or just bad goaltending from Team Magics keeper?

So then we have a couple of questions to answear. Now to actually find answears on the questions from the actual report. I'll give you a couple of screenshots on those lines i find important. Remember, white lines in the report indicates that Team Magic have the ball.

Question 1)
So we're looking for those answears about my goalie and the opponent attackers. Under you'll see those lines i found to answear this issue;

Team Magic goals

My goalie saves

Lets do the basic answears we can get out of these screenshots first. If you look at both goals first. You can't see anything about a great shot or anything about the goalie having no chance to save, so this probably means there was no extraordinary to these goals. The goalie might have made a fool of himself, although Spinner haven't made match report lines that tell us that. But, when you take a look at the saves you can see both first and fourth save being important. The second one kinda explains that my goalie had to stretch as long as he was to save the shot, but it doesn't say it was a great save. This might be because the shot wasn't hard enough and any good goalie would save the shot, just not hold it.
Anyway, from what you see on both goals and saves i would conclude that my goalie didn't have any extrodinary day. Even though he had a couple of good saves, none of the goals were of any kind we could call extrodinary. When it comes to Team Magics attackers they don't seem to have had to bad a day either, specially not in the first 15 minutes at least.
So why is that actually? It does look kinda weird, doesn't it ? What could the reason of this be? Did i change my formation or anything after the 15th minute or was it just my defenders and midfielders getting into the match and stopped his strikers?

Let's go hunting some more to see what we can find. First i'm checking the 15th minute, as i know that is one of the options for event changes, along with minute 30, 45, 60 and 75.

okey, so no events seem to be the reason. At least not in the 15th minute. Let's check the other possibileties as well. Insted of showing you screenshots of them all I'll just tell you that you didn't find any. No formation changes, no pressure changing to more attacking. No events getting spilled at all. So what about my defenders and midfielders then. Does it seem they're starting to make the tackles count? Yet again, let's go hunting. In this match report you would only find 2 such tackles. Just to show you how they look like in the report i'll give you a screenshot of one of them.

Okey, so this is starting to look a bit weird. The game totally changed after 15 minutes, but there is no visual signs of why?
So most conclusions would end up with; This must have been a fluke. So we're heading on to question 2 and 3 to check if it's a fluke.

Question 2)
This was simply a question about the penalty. So lets just check it out.

Well, that looked mighty simple. Didn't it? Nothing much to find out here anyway, for christ sake! It's just a regualr penalty. About 80-90% of them ending up as a goal. Let's move on...

Question 3)
This is kinda the same as question 1, just changing the roles on the teams. Now checking my goals and their goalie. Btw, one thing before this. Remember i had 1 penalty, 4 shots on goal and 4 goals? If not just check up on the statistic screenshot. Those statistics do not count penalty shots as shots on goal. So if you didn't know that already, you do now. So that means their goalie had 1 save then. I think many people might not know that, so they would forget to hunt down the 1 save from Team Magics goalie.

My goals

Team Magic save

There we go. Even nice little highlight on the save from Team Magics goalie, Ray Clements. Just so you wont forget penalties don't count as shots on goal even though you score on them or the goalie saves. Okey, so we yet again notice that most my goals came after the 15th minute. So now we check my goals then. Both first and second goal look as any regular goal, just like both goals Team Magic scored. Third goalie is the penalty, and what a beautiful penalty it was. The goalie didn't stand a chance on that one. Last goal says it's a great header. So in my mind that counts as a bit better then any other regular goals. So my goal scorers didn't do anything spectacular to make my goals. Simply just what they had to do.
Looking at the save we see that it was a save with 1 hand, just like one of those my goalie had. Probably due to a good placed shot.

So conclusion would be that my attackers mostly just did what they had to do and Team Magics goalie maybe didn't get to good sleep the night before the match since he only managed 1 save.

The 15th minute turn over secret:
Okey, so before i go to how i would end my conclusion on this match report i'll give out a little secret of mine. Or, it probably aint just my secret. I actually know for a fact it aint only my secret, cause i've told a couple of guys. If anyone else then i have figured it out and use it to their own advantage i'm not sure of. Anyway, back to the point.
As you all remember we couldn't find any visual reasons for the 15th minute turn over. I'll show you my event for this just in the end of this text. As you might remember, my statistics told you that i played 5-4-1, defending, longball. Is there anything you find weird about this? For instance, why play longball? It doesn't cope make sence at all. I have 4 midfielders and i want my defenders to kick the ball all up to a lonly attacker and not get to use my midfielders at all. that's just plain stupid. At least i should have used mixed if i wanted some longballs into the action. Well, the answear is kinda simple, for those who is into this game.
Tactics like shooting, tackling and playstyle do not show visual in the match report. So while you are thinking that i played longball the whole match i actually only played longball the first 15 minutes and then changed it. I'm telling this secret so you will be better on understanding changes in a match report that aint understandeble. Also look after things that look totally idiotic, like 5-4-1 with longball. I kinda use this almost all the time, just changing it from match to match regarding what looks best against my opponent. This event is also one of the reasons i picked this match report in particualre cause it show you the power of it when it works. The best part is that  your next opponent will get partly confused on what he reads and wont find any answears on how you managed to turn the match over since nothing seem to make sence. The clue is not to read your opponents match reports to prepare for the match you gonna play against him, but understanding the match report is what makes it powerful. So well, here's a visual of my event used for this particulare match.

Well, that's it for now. Hope you will find this blog helpful for understanding the match reports you read better.

Part 2 will be about formations, lineups and tactics. So stay tuned.

Scolaris magic touch:

It was first at 28th june 2001 Scolari became manager for a national side. A struggling Brazilian team asked for his help. Until then he had led both Gremio (in 1995) and Pamleiras (in 1999) to glory in the CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores. Scolari was not given any easy task as Brazil for the first time faced the danger zone of not qulifying for the FIFA World Cup for the first time in their history.

With almost military strictness, Scolari imposed a displinary code in the brazilian side. Brazil fought back and clinched the third qualifying place. Without saying the the words "I'm in charge of this team, not you!", Scolari managed to express it with leaving Romario out of his Squad that travelled to Asia, despite the country’s media baying for his inclusion.
At this time Brazil had fallen as the big tournament favourites and Argentina had taken their place but failed to do so after got knocked out of the group stage.

Scolaris men on the other hand won all their 3 opening matches and walked through the later stages to face Germany in the final. With a a watertight defence and the electric form of Ronaldo and Rivaldo brought Brazil success. They beated Germany 2-0.

With his mission accomplished, Felipão retired from the Brazilian national side and placed himself on the market just waiting for the offers to start coming in. In November 2002, he had no hesitation answering Portugal’s call to lead them into UEFA EURO 2004 at home. After getting beaten by Hellas in both the opening match and the final, Scoalri faced his first 2 defeats as a national team coach.
Never the less, both brazil and Portugal have yet to lose in any World Cup match under his management. Later today the very same man will do everything he can to prevent France from ruining his statistics.

France are the favourites:

As little as they might like it, France goes into the match as the favourites. The two teams have battled for a victory 21 times, France having the upper hand with recording 15 wins, 1 draw and only 5 losses. None of the past encounters have been in a World Cup but they have met 2 times in the European Championship. Remarkeble, both times in the semi-final.

In the 1984 European Championship France, as the hosts, met Portugal in the semi-final. The game showed up to be an absolutely firecracker. Domergue gave the hosts (france) the lead with a goal after 24 minutes before Jordão equalised in the 74th minute. The game went into extra time where Jordão, in the 98th minute, struck another goal and put the entire Stade Vélodrome, Marseille, into absolute silence before Domergue managed to put the exitment back into the spectators with a goal in 114th minute. As the entire stadium prepared their penalty shoot out mode Platini made up his mind and scored the winning goal with a 119th minute strike making the entire stadium explode. France went on to win the final 2-0 against Spain.

16 years later in EURO 2000 with Holland and Belgium being the hosts the 2 sides met once again to fight for a spot in the final. Portugal made the opening move when Nuno Gomes opened the scoring line after 19 minutes. Portugal failed to hold on to the lead and Henry didn't fail when he got the opportunity in the 51st minute. The game went into a stalemate and at full time the score was still 1-1. Yet again France would pick the longest straw. Only 3 minutes before penalty shoot out another star performer scored the winning goal. Zindine "Zizou" Zidane, struck a penalty kick past the portugese goalie.

Everyon believeing in bad omens might wanna put some cash on France winning on a late-gasp winner in extra time from a star performer after a 1-1 draw at full time.

My own thoughts and prediction for the match:

This match could be the very end for at least 1 player that have proven himself as one of the best football players of all time. Zinedine 'Zizou' Zidane on the french team have gone public telling the World Cup is the last time he play football on this level. He have given us so much joy through the years, at least have he given me. He's a fantastic player and he deserves a spectacular finnishing on his career, although a yellow card into tonights match could give him a little sting in the side if France manage to beat Portugal tonight.

But he's not alone. This could also be the last international match for Luis Figo in a Portugal side that plays to prevent the history catching up on them as they have lost twice in semi-finals against the french before. Also Figo can miss the final if he gets a yellow card and his team still beats France.

Other people having one card and is in the danger zone of missing out the final is;
France: Zidane (already mentioned), Vieira, Thuram, Sagnol, Ribery and Saha.
Portugal: Figo (already mentioned), Ricardom Ricardo Carvalho, Nuno Valente and Maniche.

The question is if this will affect the players style of play?
I think not! Ask any player on a professional level (except players for Serbia & Montenegro) what is most important. Helping your team Nation getting to the final and miss it because of suspension or do everything to prevent getting the susension and maybe lose because of it. The answear is pretty obvious, so the match wont feel this.

My tip for todays match will be a 1-0 win for France. The scorer be either Zidane or Henry.

I believe this because France is, together with Italy, the best organized team. Their defence line is almost watertight and their midfield speaks for itself. Makelele and Vieira gonna have important roles today and will most likely bother Deco out of the match at times. Thuram and Gallas will take care of Pauleta with no big troubles.

Portgual will have to rely on Maniche and Carvalho to take out Zidane, a task i think will as close to impossible is as it can be. Zidane is in terrific form atm and he's one of the most experienced players in the game today. He knows just what is expected by him and what he needs to do to make it happen.

There will be some more important Zizou magic in this World Cup!

VS.

Germany and Dortmund stadium:
Today, thuesday 4. july 2006, Germany gonna face Italy in the World Cup. The match are beaing played at the World Cup stadium in Dortmund. The stadium holds a capacity of 65.000. The people in Dortmund live for their football and the Bundesliga team, Borussia Dortmund always play for full stadium. Tonight aint gonna be different as Germany takes on Italy. Since 1935 Germany have played 14 international matches at Dortmund stadium and only once have a team denied them the victory when the Wales from 1977 drew 1-1. They have also scored a lot of goals here. Biggest victory being 8-0 against Malta in the UEFA European Qualification 1976. On the 14 matches played at this stadium, Germany holds a terrific +52 goal difference, scoring 59 goals and only letting in 7.
If Germany only had one stadium they could beat Italy in, this one would be it.

Italy topping past encounters:

Italy on the other hand got their advantages as well. Germany and Italy have faced each other 4 times throughout the World Cup history and never have the Italien side lost. One of the matches also been talked about as "the match of the century" when Italy ended up with a 4-3 victory back in the semifinal 1970 and lost against Brazil in the final.

In the semi-final 1970, Italy opened the match with an early goal after only 7 minutes played after a strike from Roberto Boninsegna. It was the time when Italy used the legendary catennaccio defensive tactics. They managed to stop every single attack from the Germany side and the 1-0 victory looked sertain until Karl-Heinz Schnellinger latched onto a Jurgen Grabowski cross in the 92nd minute with practically the last kick on the ball to send the match into extra time.

In the extra time no less then 5 goals was put into the net. First Gerd Müller striked his 9th goal in that world cup and put the germans ahead in the 95th minute, but the German side stumbled and Italy struck back with Tarcisio Burgnich in the 98 minute and Luigi Rivera in the 104 minute yet again putting them in the lead after the first half of extra time.
Only 5 minutes into the second periode of extra time Gerd Müller struck again and scored his 10th goal in the 1970 World Cup, but Italy had no intention of bringing the match to a penalty shotout and Gianni Rivera sealed a victory with a goal in the 112 minute.

12 years later, in 1982 the faced each other again in he World Cup final in Spain. The likes of Dino Zoff, Giuseppe Bergomi, Claudio Gentile, Marco Tardelli and of course Paolo Rossi lined up against Hans-Peter Briegel, Paul Breitner, Bernd Forster, Pierre Littbarski and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, holding out the prospect of 90 thrilling minutes for fans watching around the world. Italy went on to win the match 3-1. Goals were scored by Paolo Rossi (57 min), Marco Tardelli (69 min), Alessandro Altobelli (81 min) and for Germany Paul Breitner got the honor of scoring the consoling goal in the 83rd minute.

The picture on the left shows Dino Zoff with the World Cup trophy. He became the oldest player to ever winning this spectacular trophy and help Italy to their 3rd World Cup victory. Only Brazil had done the same when they got their third World Cup trophy back in 1970. Germany equalled this in 1990 when the World Cup was held in Italy.

Last two times Germany and Italy have played in the World Cup was in the group stage back in 1962 and 1978. Both matches ended in a boring 0-0 result.

My own thoughts before the match:

Germany with the defensive lack of Thorstein Frings in the midfield will most likely go out offensive to get an early goal against Italy. This is also something that the Dortmund spectators gonna demand from their national team at home in a semi-final.

Italy will play as the always do. Lay a bit down the first 20 minutes forcing the match into a stalemate and use their counter-attacks wisely. Germany aint gonna get lots of chances and the likes of Cannavaro and Materazzi aint gonna give Klose a single inch to get first to the ball. That Gattuso is starting is a good clue of what Ballack gotta expect in this match. He will be all over Ballack at any time, giving Pirlo some more space to give his passes up to Totti and Toni.

As this match most probably will end in a tactical win for any side my tip goes for Italy with their tactical genious in Marcello Lippi. Jürgen Klinsmann will be a little bit short when it comes to the coaching because the lack of experience. Marcello Lippi have been coaching for about 20-30 years. Getting his breakthrough in the
1993/94 season when he led Napoli to a place in the UEFA Cup.

Andrea Pirlo and Totti will shine in this match much due to Gattuso's defencive work. Buffon will keep another cleen sheet. Luca Toni and Totti scoring one goal each. Totti from a penalty kick. Italy win 2-0.

There is one statistic that gotta be broken tonight and sorry to say. I think Germany will get their first loss at the Dortmund Stadium and Italy will keep their unbeaten record against Germany in the World Cup history.

Europe fighting for the world (04/07/2006 18:43)
We have now reached the semi-finals in the World Cup and all none-european teams hve been knocked out one after another.

After the group stage there was 10 out of 16 teams from Europe. So only 6 teams from other parts of the world  made it through the group stage.
Argentina
Mexico
Brazil
Australia
Ghana
Ecuador

Mexico lost to Argentina in the 1/8 finals, teams like Australia, Ghana and Ecuador followed them out of the tournament later on in the same stage. Only the big World Cup teams like Argentina and Brazil made it through to the Quarter final. Argentina faced the home team, Germany, while Brazil should get their chance to revenge there 3-0 loss against France in the 1998 final.

Argentina kept a clean sheet in the first half against Germany in the first half, but also failed to score themself.
Argentina was the big team so far in the tournament and had played the best football. Against Serbia & Montenegro, a game they won 6-0, they created a goal that will go into every football lovers heart. It might be the best goal every created in the world cup history. Early in the second half Germany would get to feel Argentinas force infront of goal. Riquelme struck a perfect corner around the 6 yard box where Ayala managed to sneak infront of Klose and headed the ball into the net.
Argentina was 1-0 up. Argentina seemed to have control, but then in the 70 minute thing started to get a bit strange. In the 71st minute their goalie had to go off with an injury, making their second goalie come onto the pitch without getting warm first. Then in the 72nd minute Jose Pekerman made his first strange move and took Riquelme off the pitch, then just 7 minutes later he made a second strange substitue and took Hernando Crespo off the field as well. Clearly Argentina got to defensive. Just 1 minute later Germany struck back with Klose and made it 1-1. Germany now had the upper hand.
The game went into extra time where no one managed to strike a winning goal and the match needed to be decided on penalties.
Jens lehmann became the hero as he saved both penalties from Roberto Ayala and Esteban Cambiasso. Germany scored on all there 4 penalties.
The big difference was a little note Lehmann had hidden in his right sock bewteen the penalties. Between every penalty kick he would take it out and read it. What was on the note? What better then who normally took Argentinas. penalties and which corner they normally placed the ball. Klinsmann had done it again. That guy thinks of everything .

In the other match where Brazil met France there was no doubt which team was the best. France had full control on the former World Champions although the only managed to win the match 1-0 after Thierry Henry struck home a 1-0 win on a freekick from Zidane in the 54th minute. Brazil never managed to threat Barthez in the French goal and France got the win rather easy.

That's how the last none-european countries got knocked out of the ongoing World Cup. Now we only got 4 european teams left in the tournament.
