| With the start of exams, the last minute revision and pressure just mount for the exams which could easily make or break my chances in a year's time. Luckily, I do not have to do my exams on Monday, because I get to go to my brother's funeral! Oh, wait..that's..
Just what I needed. Now I get my exams for a longer period and my temporary relief is hardly something I'll enjoy. First death I have ever come to terms with..

| ..Just. I am coming on generally once a week for about half an hour, for stadium mainly and general team management. Maybe when my stadium is complete, then I shall come back! But for now, I have 2 other games which I enjoy more. If anyone is interested as to why they are more enjoyable, without naming them, here we go.
Basically, one game as it is a football playing game, is more intense and it runs on your own schedule. ML, despite being a good manager game, has relatively little to do. Yes, there is the forums, but I have 3 other forums I visit regularly which I much prefer the layout. The background is a little dark and the colour-scheme is a bit dull/off. Just mix the black and the white, rather than having the ML portal almost all white and the game section almost all black. I would prefer a consistent mix.
Secondly, this other game is a vastly popular FPS [First person shooter], which again is a lot more intensive, more enjoyable and easy to get better over the free time I have. Also, I struggle to get bored of it, I have about a month's playtime yet I have no will to quit, whether I aim consistently nailing grenades, backstabbing, or being the above myself. Death is something to learn from, so the main problem is removed. Unlike EA games, it is constantly updated for bugs and for general updates to keep you interested.
When I stop playing the FPS for a session, I go to the forums I regularly visit about the FPS and this other site. Then if the forums have been successfully cleaned up, I sometimes come here. So that is where ML is on my priority list. Oh, wait, need to do some revision now. Cya all later! | Read the full entry |

| The Game
Managerleague is an online football manager with 38,000 managers, in 19 different leagues and 16 different languages. It started back in May 2005 with Fifth Season AS deciding to bring out heir latest game. The man doing all the work with editing the game inerface is Christian "Spinner" Lassem, and he is assisted with Gizmo and Xontas. They deal with in-game issues such as violations of the rules and support requests.
Each season lasts 37 rounds, which include basic training, matches, custom cups and official cups. Official cups include a League Cup, Department Cup (everyone enters one of these) and the newly formed high-class Champions League.
The great part of ManagerLeague is not just the gameplay, but when you have spare time, the community!
There are several socialising places
- Forums - A very active one compared to other games I have played
- IRC Chat - Talk to other managers by a chat client - very useful, underrated
- Private messaging - The least common way of socialising, but it is used generally!

- Game Play (0 - 3) (Decimals are allowed)
- Fun (0 - 3) (Decimals are allowed)

Appearance:
Colours:
The game from scratch in all fairness looks bland Black with the occasional lighter colour such as green makes it look like the game has not been fully developed properly designed. Once you have done the simple process of registration you get a new main colour. Except it isn't a colour. White. Already a new user thinks "Oh dear, why should I be interested in this, when it gives me nothing good to look at". It is a very boring cover and nothing seems to stand out. When you go into the my team section, you have a few pictures, but again, predominantly black. As you look arounf, you get a few pictures of a pitch, a stadium, a match in progress, but that's about it from all 30 pages the site has to offer in the game side of things. This gets 1.5 of the 3 points for the appearance section, and I will give it 0.75 - half-marks, room for improvement.
Layout:
This is a massive improvement. The answer to the previous question referring to "nothing good to look at" has been answered in this department. This game is for the mature people in this society, who care much more about the organisation of things than pictures jumping off the page right into your face. From the start it's fairly basic - 3 buttons referring to the basic actions. Then on the first interface inside the game we see a nice layout of ideas, spread all around the page, a good show of all parts of the basic community. Then inside the game one of the best ideas I have seen - latest forum posts on the front page. I would nevr have imagined using the forums if it wasn't here, and I think the community thriving as much as it is has only one root - this idea. Elsewhere, we see set oages for all of the pages needed for a manager. Simple but effective layout.
This gets 1.5 points out of the appearance section, and I will give it 1.25 - not perfect, but not far off.
Total marks for appearance: 2/3
Introduction/Learning Curve
Very beginning:
I'm afraid this is a big downer for ML. there is a threshold of knowledge that a new manager can have, and this, with new features, will be surpassed soon. You are given a standard long rules section, which admittedly is standard - not a problem. However, the game manual which has all the knowledge doesn't actually help tremendously much - you have to use this after you get some ideas how to play. You need the quick guide start for this, but once you have done all it says, you know you have plenty of time to settle down, look around and relax. So I am making it seem simple how to learn it all eh? Well, say a manager looks straight at the top - let's look around. Hmm, what do i do? where do i go? Andwer is you are about 95% stuffed - unless you find that quick start guide. This gets 2 out of 3 marks for this section, and I give it 1. Half-marks, room for improvement.
I understand!.
You finally have go the hang of all of it. But, you start to think, that was one hell of an effort to get this far, and I dread to think what will happen next for workload. Well here's a problem. You realise that when you know everything, you are well behind. So more people leave, as it is not a level playing field and there is a lot of work to do. This gets 1 out if 3 marks for this section and I will give it 0.75. Nearly perfect, but a few managers are lost here.
Total marks for Introduction/Learning Curve: 1.75/3
Gameplay:
Quantity:
This game has so much to choose from here. It has detailed tactics such as offside trap, it has stadium decay, easy-to--read individua training page (which includes training for each player and whether the player is resting in training or not). Selectable team training and training camps, which although is not realistic, it adds something to the game. There is a running commentary in match for excitement and interest just to add to the amount.
Overall, there is a lot of ideas in the game itself, and it has 1 limit - the limit of the human mind! This gets 1.5 of the 3 points for the gameplay section, and I will give it 1.25. Not perfect, but what is?
Quality:
You can say it's all well when there is infinite amounts of ideas, but if none of them work in practise, what's the point? Therefore the need of this section is high.
All of the following get 0.25 out of the quality section
Matchplay - the running commentary can admittedly be a little frustrating with reaction to tasks, but overall is excellent. Score is 0.2
Team - Tactics is in depth with ideas visibly put into matches. Score is 0.25
Transfer - The search engine is fantastic, you can make it very specific. Also the scouting system is excellent! Score is 0.25
Staff - It is hard to see a noticable difference with staff, seeing what they add. Score is 0.1
Stadium - Upgrades realy make a huge difference, and it lasts 26 seasons - in depth with calculations as well! Score is 0.25
Leagues - Very structured and detailed league table, could do with a few more features such as fixtures underneath etc. Score is 0.15
Total marks for Gameplay: 2.45/3
Fun (Section is short - experience is not fact, so short):
Game:
I thoroughly enjoy the game itself, great fun and it does really make you feel like a manager...almost. The managerial challenges make the game even more enjoyable. This is the main part of the game so scores 2/3 for this section - I will give it a big 2! Full marks for a section!
New people:
The socialising oppurtunities are never-ending, and the cmmunity is lively and great. This is one of the best parts of Managerleague, no doubt!
1/3 marks are awarded to this part of the fun section, I will give it 1!
Total marks for Fun: 3/3!
Stamp of Approval:
One of the best games around, 1!
Total: 10.2 - My marking was harsh!

This will be a VERY said day for me. Scrooge is one of my best friends here and i would never want him to leave. But, if thats the way fate will be, so be it, that is what is meant to be so I and we need to get on with it.
I wish scrooge the very best in RL and hope he comes back

Throughout my time i have enjoyed playing ML. But this was mainly down to the people here. This is my way of saying thank you.
1. Davion
I, one day saw him write in the forum. I sent him a PM asking how he got rich. He said come on ML-Chat, i had never done this before. We talked and he helped me. Now i ask him evrythin, should i buy him? Wat should i upgrade? etc. I now have his msn and he is a great friend
T2. Mr Jolly G Reaper+Shobnall+Animal
With reaper, i got recognition by writing about my player in the newspaper. He said I am not allowed. He deleted it without me getting in trouble. We talked and he is my friendly advisor.
Shobnall. One day on ML-Chat i talked and he saw my name, "Woking_F". This was when Burton 1-1 Woking, and he was from burton. From then on i turned hate into friendship.
Animal, he has given me 60 creds. 20 kindness, 40 creds for my blog. He has also been generally supportive and kind after he was introduced to me by Davion.

| Training camp:
Fitness:
Basic standard: +1
High standard: +3
Luxury : +5
- The max fitness you can gain is if you put luxury during the camp (5 points), and four slots on rest in team training (4 points). You then get 5+4 = 9 points. If you rest on individual training, u will get 1st digit of stamina, but you will getno gains from the player.
Key knowledge:
- The camp in round 30 and 36 should not be abroad, because morale is reseted at the end of the season
This has been argued.
If you have an important playoff game you should go abroad (sebas), unless your morale is already high (stambros) | Read the full entry |
|
| Individual Training:
Fitness:
From training: +2
From rest: +(Stamina-points/10) nb: rounded down
- If a player is rested at training he gets both +2 and 10% of stamina. (He then of course don't train, and can't gain attributes)
- If a player is not resting he only gets +2. (But can gain one attribute in the skill he is training)
Season gains:
0-7: Poor nb: Subjective
8-15: Ok
16-25: Good
26-34: Great
35+: Excellent
These values are mainly for 17-18y/o, use your judgement to think what a good gain is for older players (sebas)
Key knowledge:
- Lower stats gain in theory faster, but what stats that increase in matches are very player-dependent
- Best way to gain stats throughout the season is friendlies
- The term "High Potential" is given to players how have/thought to have the ability to gain alot of stats
- Even though you gain the most with friendlies, what stat the player gains is somewhat random, with normal traning you can select what stat the player shall have a possibility to gain in. Less total gain, but possible gain in key stats, that can result in a higher Q-rise compared to just playing friendlies and resting your players.
- You should always train a bold stat in individual training as a better Q gain will happen that way. | Read the full entry |
|
| Team Traning:
The important four:
- Attacking nb: not counting morale
- Defending
- Understanding
- Teamplay
Key knowledge:
- Keep the important four high (80+)
- Should be able to keep four other stats at a 75+ level
- Consistency is important, focus on four selected stats over time nb: but can trow in a rest or morale now and then when needed
- Match reports holds important clues on how your team is doing in certain team related skills; trow-in, corner ect.
- Morale is reseted to 50 at the beginning of the season, the other team training stats stay the same
- Morale is of great importance, and many sensible managers focus on this at the beginning of the season
- The offside stat is thought to both make defenders better at offside, and make attackers avoid offside nb: uncertain about attacker effect
- No point in giving your team stats info to other, keep it a team secret
- You can not decrease in a stat you are currently training
- Morale should NOT be trained at camp, go abroad for this affect. Train in normal team training though (MrBlack) | Read the full entry |
|
| Tactics:
Tackling:
Soft tackling: Positive: Less fitness-loss, less fouls Negative: Risk of not making key tacklings
Normal tackling: Positive: Make more of those key tackling Negative: greater chance of fouls and fitness-loss
Hard tackling: Negative: The tade-off tacklings won vs fouls/fitness doesn't pay, avoid <- nb: Subjective
Captain:
- Age and Perception plays a role
- Age over 27 is prefered
- Though to bring a positive effect to the teams players in the same position as the captain, ex. the defensive line if the captain is a defender
Freekicks:
Own half: Defensive player with best passingskill
Opponent half: Trade-off between passing and scoring, and possibly perception
Penalty:
- Best scoring

| Taxes:
Taxes are paid during the season change. Taxes are only paid for profit over 2 mill, according to following table.
2 mill profit: No tax on these 2 mill.
2-5 mill profit = 10% taxes (300k)
5-10 mill profit = 20 % taxes (1 mill)
10-20 mill profit = 30% taxes (3 mill)
20-50 mill profit = 40% taxes (12 mill)
Above 50 mill profit = 50% taxes
The way the taxes are calculated are the following:
With a profit at 60 mill you pay: Zero on the first 2 mill, 10% on the next 5 mill, 20% on the next 5 mill, 30% on the next 10 mill, 40% in the next 30 mill and since you got 10 mill over 50 you pay 50% of those 10 mill.
This would equal: 300k + 1 mill + 3 mill + 12 mill + 5 mill = 21.3 mill in taxes.
If you got 12 mill in profit you would get 300k + 1 mill + 600k (30% of the 2 mill over 10) = 1.9 mill
10 mill = 1,3 mill tax
20 mill = 4,3 mill tax
30 mill = 8,3 mill tax
40 mill = 12,3 mill tax
50 mill = 16,3 mill tax
60 mill = 21,3 mill tax
70 mill = 26,3 mill tax
80 mill = 31,3 mill tax
90 mill = 36,3 mill tax
100 mill = 41,3 mill tax | Read the full entry |
