The Crazy Interview! (09/02/2013 13:13)

I've had the pleasure to interview Wayne, a.k.a. Crazy Lion - winner of six English League titles, an English League cup, and the Manager League Champions League this season. He's in the final of the League Cup this season, and he's close to realizing the Treble! Let's see his excuses...

I'm ready to start whenever you are.

Ah, ok. Took a while to find you, I'm slow.

To start off with my first question, who are you?

I'm just a guy! My life story is a long one. ;)

Can you sum it up in one sentence?

To cut a long story short: I am married with a girlfriend and live in Cambridge, and I love tactical games! Background, I lived in Marbella for 10 years with a real estate business. Have travelled almost everywhere and love life!

You've done particularly well in ML. Nobody won the English Division One 4 times in a row since season 30. What's your secret?

There are many secrets to ML. Spinner willl not publish a "how to manual", but the secret to winning the league is constantly keeping tabs on the opposition! Everything is relative in ML! I timed my build to make sure I was the last of the big builders; that way, I could win the most ;)

How did you hear about ML in the first place?

Google got me hooked! But for a very long time I did not take it seriously; then, when I did, I was a free player.

Who are the first people you met in ML?

Um, now you are taking me back. The first friend was the manager of Prestons Barmy FC. We still chat even now. That was in the 5th division. After that, I talked quite a bit with Thich who was the first and best builder to date. It was the manager of the dead dolphines of Tahiji that helped me the most though!

What is your best memory of the game? (well, apart from the MLCL this season)

My best memory... well, there are so many. I would say when Spinner adopted one or two of my ideas. It was my idea to have more options to save formation for example! I am proud to have helped even in a very small way! Also, when King Eric won the MLCL. It was the first time for an English club to win it for a long time, and we were all very very proud. Me especially! :)

Haha, it was a Romanian winning it for you though.

He is English now!!! We English claim anyone we want!!!  I am proud to have started the MLWC too!

Well, this discussion is a bit too positive now, so I'd like you to tell me about what annoyed you most in the time spent in ML.

Um, there are only two things that have annoyed me in ML. Both are managers.

Care to name and shame or hint for your fans' delight?

The first would be the Sweaty Sock! He got right under my skin! Luckly, he ended up being one of my best friends on ML. He is a great guy! Bill, I love you man! The second would be one of my main rivals, but to be fair, I have wound him up as much as he has me so I should probably appologize to him...but not yet. (BTW, I should say that the MLWC was not my idea that honour goes to Willy Wonka/NC10)

Talking about your rivals, do you feel sorry for allowing Advent to end up no higher than 2nd place... every season?

Roflmao! Not really, he has made some terrible tactical mistakes. To be fair he could have won the league every season if he had priortized. For example, I have always put the League before the League Cup. If I had tried to win both some seasons then I would have won nothing! I would say, though, that I have learnt a lot from watching his team! Many managers rebuild but he never has and taught me the value of playing ML as Spinner intended! Thich won the MLCL with an old team that everyone thought was past it! In that there is a pearl of wisdom!

Do you miss having Homer on your team?

Yes, I do. He was the first player I ever bought. I used him as a test case to see what was possible! He turned out to be one of my best players, although Burns was the one that really changed the way I thought about ML! Burns, what a revelation! All my players were at least 4.5 stars except Burns!  I am training them the same but suddenly Burns puts on a spurt and gains in Q like crazy. At he same time his performance goes through the roof and stays there season after season! This palyer showed me that performance in ML is EVERYTHING. Stars mean nothing if a player already has Q. The Q of a player will affect performance depending on the Q of the opposition but it is the performance that counts and Burns would only play well in one position! So now I am very very careful about player positions: some are flexible but others will only perform where they are the happiest on the field!

Are you going to send flowers to Trx if you take away the league cup title from him?

About TRX, maybe he is a top guy! I have sent my Trophy to Marmite though.

Doesn't he have enough tropihies already?

No. I named my team after him ths season so it was only fair he got the trophy. Chairman said he would send it direct so it will be a surprise for him! I have named my team after 3 managers now and I pick a new one every season! I'm thinking of actioning my team name next season: it will be whoever donates the most to Diambars.

That auction bit sounds like an arrogant guy trying to do charity.

Nah, the action is really just an arrogant guy having a bit of fun! ;)

How do you choose the managers you want to honour with your team name?

The first manager was Danstar as he was my best friend in the game, the second was Rasta Mouse as he was unfairly treated imho by support and I wanted to highlight his plight. This season was Marmite a.k.a. Dave Travers as he is probably the best all round manager in the English Division so I thought it was right! Apart from that, I try to chose managers who I like.

Moving on, can you say ML has an impact on your social life? Like not being able to go camping because you need to do your friendlies?

Lol, it has impacted my social life both good and bad! My girlfriend thinks I'm having a romance with it!! I do tend to put friendlies off though, so they revolve around my life. I often miss them in the morning! You can normally get 40 friendlies done on the last round of ML so that helps a lot!

Well, now that you've won it all, what's next?

What's next? I'm not sure! My aim was to win the CL, that was it!!! Now I have a whole lot of friends in ML and nothing to prove. I have promised to publish my blog! I have a huge blog that is basically a guild to everything you ever wanted to know about ML with more quote from Spinner than you can shake a stick at. It is surprising that very few managers in ML know anything about tactics. The only ones are the Norwegians, since their league is so strong that they have been experimenting for quite a while!

If you remember Ro Dream Team, he won MLCL twice, and he said he doesn't really study his opposition and goes with his own tactics. I guess everyone has different ways to success.

If he really said that then he was very lucky! There is a lot to be said in that as he would gain two very big advantages!

I read that in a blog some time ago, but who knows? He won a lot of trophies.

Firstly, he would get the bonus for not changing his formation or playstyle. Secondly, his players would most probably never change position so if he has them correct either by design or luck. This would help a lot too, but tactics do play a huge part of ML! Of course, tactics have changed a lot in recent times!

Well, is there any other "unknown secret" that you would like to make available to the public?

There are so many secrets about my life! Which one would you like to know? The best one would be about ML... drum roll... rock-paper-scissors! That's all anyone needs to know about Manager League, except watch the keepers!
