The Essential Guide to Gains (19/09/2012 18:14)

How to make my players gain? I get asked this question a lot! To save me answering this question in messages here is a little blog to help.

The essential to do list and miscellaneous information for maximum gains.

  • 1.       Play 201 friendlies.
  • 2.       Always Sub 3 young players into the squad.
  • 3.       Keep the average age of the squad above age 28-33 depending on the age of players you want to gain.
  • 4.       Always have 7-8 players age 32+ in the squad around the younger players (the older the better).
  • 5.       Do not assume a low Q old player will help with gains generally they should be within 5Q of the players you want to gain but never below Q 75 no matter               how low the Q of your youths!
  • 6.       When a player is gaining well keep playing him.
  • 7.       If an older player is gaining put a different older player in the line up and put a young player in his position on the field.
  • 8.       If your not gaining well stop playing friendlies and try again in 15 minutes.
  • 9.      Never train more than 7 youths if you want monster gains.
  • 10.   Subbing an older player for a younger one will help the younger one gain.
  • 11.   Try to play slightly higher Q teams with lower fitness
  • 12.   Keep fitness levels up when playing friendlies
  • 13.   Gains are better in League games than Cup games and Cup games better than Friendlies.
  • 14.   Weekend cups can account for an extra 80 games per season! Play in them!
  • 15.   Soft tackles will help preserve fitness therefore helping with gains.
  • 16.   Do not play friendlies with managers that do not play soft tackles!
  • 17.   Give the players you want to gain responsibilities in the match, i.e. corners etc
  • 18.   Using 1-2 old keepers in the line up to help keep the average age up.
  • 19.   Put the players you want to gain on the wings so they see more of the ball.
  • 20.   Always put keepers in the centre if you are playing them outfield.
  • 21.   The higher the age and Q of a player the more they will help younger ones gain! Use these players in every friendly!
  • 22.   Gaining is relative the older the players you want to gain the older the “old” players to help with gains must be!
  • 23.   Stars make very little difference to gains if you are training your players properly! Especially when they are young! Ignore Stars.
  • 24.   Formation will make no difference to your gains but it does not hurt so use any you like. Many swear by 4-3-3 or 4-4-2.
  • 25.   Do not give up on a player if he hits a bad patch but if he has not gained well by age 20 sell him.
  • 26.   The younger a player and the worse his Q the more he will gain. Expect gains to slow down around Q 88 and almost stand still from Q 96+.
  • 27.   Always train young players in Camps, extreme will give better gains and are preferred, although if you have young low Q players lesser camps will help.               When you have players over Q85 always use extreme camps.
  • 28.   Resting older players in camps is a tried and tested method of many managers to make sure the players they want to gain do! I am not completely sure it           works but it seems to.
  • 29.   The more players you train the more atts you will get but the less concentrated they will be. 600 atts per season may seem great but experienced                          managers would rather settle for 350 atts that are concentrated on a few players.
  • 30.   Players play best in there own positions and gain well like this. If you want a player to gain in an att rarerly used in his native position you may try playing                him in a postition where he will use that skill more, although this is not as effective as many managers would have you be believe!
  • 31.   Players cannot "Steal gains" although it often helps to think of the starting line up like this! Every old player in the squad will help increase the chance of a younger             "less experienced" player gaining when there turn comes.
  • 32.    Spinner mintains that having one older player per line will help with gains just as much as filling your squad with older players yet no team who has won the gainers          thread has ever done it using his method.
  • 33.     The age of a player is not as important as the amount of games they have played in relation to the players you want them to help! When selecting oldies look for               300 games plus ideally although you can sometimes get a keeper with 500 games +!!
  • 34.    Do not over load the team with old keeper! They have their place for increasing age and also last longer that outfield players but every keep playing ouffield will hurt            performance and also gains. I would not recomemnd more than 2.
  • 35.    Hidden stats do not change (except temper) so do not think that by playing more friendlies and gaining more a player will become a superstar. You have to identify            the high hidden stats early then increase Q to get a real star!!

A small note on Stars: Many managers think that stars will make the player gain more than another with a lesser Star rating. Spinner will confirm this that the higher the Star rating the more chance the player will have to gain both through playing games and especially through training. He even conducted a number of tests in Development last year which confirmed this!

I am of a different opinion! I do not believe that Stars affect a player very much and if you train a player properly then any star player will gain very well. My own 3.5 star keeper reached Q 93 by age 20 and Q 97 by age 24. This being said Stars are important when a player is training and I feel that at a very high Q it will be very difficult to push a low star player to Q99 but then again how many players reach Q 99?

As a rough guide if you are training 6 youths age 17-20 then you will want to have each player gaining around 50 atts per season. The maximum you can expect from a youth is about 10Q in a season however this is rare, 7-8 Q is a very good season.

Good luck with your gains. Cheers Crazy Lion.
