Temporary Australia Thread (18/08/2007 20:20)
Since we have been kicked out of the forums for having a thread that is too popular I will try to provide a temporary thread hoping that this does not contravene Xontas' rules . I had to delete a thread and I think Robbie had a thread deleted after I posted in it so this is third time lucky. Xontas says he is looking at possible solutions and maybe this will tie us over until then. The problem here is that only a few people will visit and once a post is posted it cannot be edited ...

Look at me ma! Top of the World. King for a Day (Fool for a lifetime) :) Still gloating from my glorious victory in "The Title". Counting Robo and Robbie as my victims just makes things sweeter. I just have to ignore that King Arthur beat me in a friendly afterwards and that the Australia thread was locked :(

It feels like I have written this everywhere (because I have :)) but ... Australian Open III created, Sat 25/08, Invites sent, Australian managers in Div 4, 5 and 6 who didn't receive an invite please post below or in the appropriate thread in the Custom Cup Forum. I have made it as a 32 team cup this year as there are couple of newly active Aussies and Div 4 has been included.

pictureNot a separate forum, a thread where we know certain people will look. Most of what was said in the Australia thread could not be separated into different threads as it was chatting - not distinct information exchange. As an example, the thread that I mentioned above  as me deleting was about the number of places I had made in the Aussie Open. I wanted to ask some Aussies whether I should invite the Kiwis to ensure the 32 spots are filled. Barkeeper pointed out that it looked like Custom Cup advertising and should be moved so I chose to delete it myself. Where could I post that thread in the forums when it is intended for a select audience and open discussion between that audience?
And as the title says it is temporary and hopefully it is temporary. BTW I would use the English forum if I wasn't banned :) (Australian humour - you may take offence to it but the Aussies will laugh (after questioning why) due to the situation I find myself)

pictureYou guys were sleeping or partying last night when the proverbial hit the fan. Xontas locked the thread as it was country specific and always remained at the top of the list of threads. If more of such threads were started then any normal General Discussion thread would be drowned out by the popular long threads which could be construed as exclusive. His point of view is understandable as he has to ensure each thread has an opportunity to be seen and if threads like ours weren't shut down then it would be more difficult to shut down the other foreign language threads in the English section as it could be argued that it was double standards (ie no exclusive threads allowed).

I started a thread asking you guys about the amount of spots in the Aussie Open and Robbie started a thread about what we should call the next Aussie thread :) I deleted my thread and Robbie's thread was later deleted by Xontas and a couple of hours later I thought of this solution and posted in the General Discussion directing you guys here. Xontas followed the link and read the above and thought that I already had two threads deleted for spamming so he deleted the redirect thread and banned me from the forums :)

Some mails were exchanged, my ban was promptly lifted, and I was given the opportunity to explain why I believe our thread was positive rather than negative. As you can see by Xontas' post above he believes we are trying to be exclusive and split the English Forum into two - one for the aussies and one for the other english speakers. I've tried to explain that we only want one thread (I'm sure the Malaysians, Singaporeans etc. would also appreciate a continuous thread in their native language) and that it was not about being exclusive of other countries but inclusive of the Aussies. I told him that plenty of non-Aussies had posted and were welcome to post and be involved and that the thread provided an opportunity for any one of us to post and know that every other "member" of the thread would most likely read that post.

Xontas looks after the whole forums and couldn't see why we wanted our own little corner of the forum. I tried to explain to him that the forums are for information exchange and friendship and that our thread had over time become less about info exchange and more about friendship. It is difficult to start a new thread with the point of friendship (eg I can't start a new thread to sledge Robo or Robbie about beating them in "The Title") and that is why the Australia thread was important to us.

If you think this post is extensive, you should have seen the mail I sent to Xontas :D It was sent at 8am this morning after no sleep but he said he would take it to the Administrators forum to have it discussed. I could have possibly denigrated the Americans a bit in that mail :o so if any Admins are American I think they could have reason to vote against :) Now it is a matter of wait and see. I sincerely hope this "thread" is temporary as it is being terribly exclusive :(

picture:D Appreciating that joking :) That is a major problem, where we know we are joking but now have to walk around on eggshells hoping not to offend :(

Apparently it wasn't the length of the thread which contravened the forum rules. I could have accepted that as we really did need to start again. It was the exclusive country topic which was of concern which is a bit harder to accept but that's the judgement call Xontas made. I did mention in Robbie's short term thread that we could start a new thread every 100 posts or so but that thread was promptly deleted so it was the quality not the quantity :(

picture:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D you get the idea :)

I guess it was a weekend of ups and downs in ml. The downs being the closure of the Australia thread and on a more humourous note me being banned from the forums for a small period of time.

The ups would have to be winning "The Title" and "Champions League 0708" :D That's right - two custom cup wins in one weekend :) That shows there is a lot to be said for playing soft tackles (and a lot of luck) :) The CL cup was only 8 teams and Div 5 and 6 only but I'm pretty happy that the players backed up after winning "The Title". Probably the strangest thing was that I didn't have to change tactics all weekend as I was banking on Robo changing tactics with the intention of me changing tactics :) The six other games only required squad rotation and little thought, the way I like it :). (Robbie not being online helped a lot :))

One problem is if I have to play Robo next weekend, who is going to double bluff a double bluff? I think we will both freeze when it comes to tactics and not change anything :)

I really dont get what your point is here?...how do you expect us to communicate with other australians? What do you want us to do? Create numerous threads with headings such as  "GrannyRobo vs The Raiders -- Who will win?" , "w00t, I just bought a new striker", etc? And one further point, the thread was started in the general discussions forum where, from my understanding, we could discuss just about anything. And if you're worried that the thread was too exclusive, how about we change the name to something completely different such as "Manager league is pretty cool" so that no one would think that it is an "australian only" thread.

It is Xontas' (I think unpaid) job to maintain the forums and make sure everything is in order. The post he put in above was when he was at his most frustrated as he mistakenly thought I was spamming the forums. He is looking from the point of view from all ML users where we are looking from our own personal point of view. The game is better for us when we have a thread to communicate with each other but he doesn't seem to understand that :( A lot of other countries have tried to establish what we had but couldn't because they had to write it in their native tongues. To allow ours to continue would have been double standards in this respect. They gave the thread time to die a natural death as most threads do but it was still going strong 3 months later so he locked it. Hopefully a solution will be found as this solution is not ideal as everybody has to think about coming in here whereas with the forums it was always noticeable and easy to see new posts.

Australian Open III is full (omg) I didn't think we could do it :)

My custom cup form is something to be feared, King Arthur. Are you sure you want to bring that on yourself :D

pictureBeing forum moderator on another site, I can see the distinction between what your seeing and what Xontas is seeing;

The Aussies speak the same language as the English (one of the pearls of the Empire still around!) so it makes sense for all the English speaking people together in one area.  Asking for your own area of the forum is (in my eyes) both greedy and rude; yes, there are a large number of Aussies who play ML but theres also an equivilant number from different people around the UK for example.  Geordies (people from the Newcastle area) and Scousers (people from the Liverpool area) play ML and its a localised problem we have - Geordies and Scousers SPEAK the same language but they have there own variables which make them different (rhyming slang etc).  Giving the Aussies there own forum would be nice yes, but would set a precident which could see different people from different areas asking for there own forum area, ie Eastern and Western Canada (being English speaking and French speaking) for example.

Should the original thread have been closed? Definitly, it was HUGE and you had to scroll through all the comments to get any sense of the banter going on.  Should a new thread have been allowed to carry on for the Aussies? Sure, its a collection of people talking about an issue which brings them together (being an Aussie).  Should the Aussies have there own sub forum? No, its not warrented and they've shown they're fine using there own thread.

</2 cents>

This thread is only going slow now, Xontas :) As I said above there are various problems with this temporary "solution". Being outside the forums is too much hassle. So we have time to give you :) I didn't expect this to be put on the highlighted blogs though :S

Your pushing towards my proposed solution Matt :) Nobody wants an Aussie forum as there aren't enough of us to make it worthwhile. There are plenty of other countries that would benefit from their own forum a lot more than us. What I proposed was a forum section (ie like the Suggestions section etc.) where a thread like ours would be allowed to exist. That solution will not only make us happy but would allow the Malaysians to have their own thread in their language as the language criterion would not be enforced in that forum. I don't know the criterion for each thread as from my perspective I would suggest a country based criterion. As you pointed out the Geordies could benefit from their own thread etc. It would be difficult solution though as it would have to be self policed as Xontas, although being Dutch, probably can't speak 200+ languages :)

pictureSolves one problem, Robbie :) ... but then creates another :( West Sam can't come in and tell us that we stink (probably a good thing :)) and Mycroft can't come in and tell us that his brother is playing Aussie Rules in Sweden. It would be an exclusive thread which would be OK for us Aussies but we would miss a part of the old thread. It may be the only solution available if self policing isn't viable. We wouldn't need self policing as our thread would be in English but the Swahili thread may have a problem with somebody continually spamming about their players for sale. I would think group pressure (self policing) would be the best option. Mods would facilitate this better but to have 200 mods, one for each thread, would be difficult as well. The more you think about it the harder it gets :( Xontas, take as much time as you need ... but hurry up as we miss our thread :D

How did the guys from Singleton go on their camp? Any late night tent swapping? (had to ask as I went to an all boys school and we trekked 3km one night only to be flatly rejected by the ladies so I'm jealous of coeducational students (ie trekking 100m to be flatly rejected) :)) Was it "proper" camping or just staying in a youth hostel?

pictureHow can you win dep't cup games, jm? Not you personally :) but in general. That is the main part of the game my team struggles in :(

Robbie convinced me to sell my Q74 17yo att and I decided a 36 hour auction would be appropriate (with a silly bid disclaimer). Well I received that silly bid of 35 mill within 12 hours so I sold on the spot, despite the potential for higher bids, because he went up to Q75 overnight. Are people forgetting that he was a Q71 17yo? There are silly prices at the moment. Robbie had to pay nearly twice what I wanted for my Q71 17yo def as people kept overbidding his bid. I didn't know if I rejected the other bids it would also cancel Robbie's bid but he was happy to pay me more and lessen his tax bill :) With a prospective tax bill of 26 mill I decided drastic action was required so I bought a Q86 23yo att for 80 mill. Definitely no tax bill for me now :D Hopefully the increase in wages doesn't affect my earnings capacity too much though.

One game clear on top spot and an av First XI Q of 79 now, I might be safe :) I've had three players reach Q80 this season, just waiting for my two 18 yo keepers to make it there :)

Soon I won't have any youths left after selling them to you guys :) bozo_69 just bought my other 17yo def off me (tup) Anybody want a Q72 GK :D :D :D I laugh now but when I first started a Q72 17yo GK would have been alright :) Strange how perspectives change as the team develops. The only space left on my team now is possibly in midfield but the youth would have to knock out my Q76 18yo who is averaging 74 which would put him at about 20th-30th on the league list and he would win the youth best average by about 7 :) If only he had played a couple of more games as he will only rack up 15 games at the end of the season :(

To guarantee promotion I set a new team record with a 1-9 win :) I wish I had of had the home ground advantage :D

Once again I wish my team could play well in the Dep't Cup :) Good Luck to all those Aussie teams in the final next Wednesday.

It's my own fault because I didn't realise he had a high flair rating until it was too late. Now i have to work out a way of getting his gains up to Div 4 standard :)

Won another custom cup. The good feeling from it isn't there anymore as having a Q86 striker in Div 5 makes it too easy. It also probably doesn't help that I've won four out of my last five and lost the other to a penalty shootout in the final :) If I win the big prize cup tomorrow then I'm sure the good feeling will return :D I don't like the fitness losses that I incurred tonight though :(

I've just updated the Aussie Ladder Blog up to the end of the season. I managed to sneak into some of the top fives but unfortunately Robbie, your last week has seen you drop out of them :( Robo was just pipped at the post by me in the GD stakes as he ended up sixth and Robbie would have been just behind him.

There are eight of us promoting from Div 5 to 4 and Nexus (Arrows) has promoted to Div 3. ddude has won promotion to Div 1 so Robo will have some Aussie company up there when he makes it in 3 seasons time :) Seven Div 5 teams are in the Play-Offs tonight so hopefully the guys like King Arthur join us in Div 4 next season. We will have 13 in Div 4 at the least but it could be a lot more depending on how Jake, Robo, and Mennie do in their Play-Offs and how the Div 5 guys go in theirs. Good Luck, fellas.

Good Luck to these teams in the second playoff.
As you said Robo, there is always next season when you get to promote "properly" and get a trophy with it. That is the positive I see in not promoting last season through the play-offs. I still would have rathered promoting though :)

I got a Q68 def 17yo (tdown) I saw King Arthur got a Q69 def which is a bit better than mine but still (tdown). Any good youth recruits out there?

Just went though my new department :) I have an excel sheet that with about 10 minutes work I can see the Av Q etc of the teams and their best performers. My squad is the "best" with a Av Q77 and then there is one Q76 and four Q 75s. It isn't an indicator that my team is the best as some teams may have a high team Q but low squad Q, but it has given me some confidence coming into the season :) Interesting to see one team promote from Div 5 (Patel FC) with a squad av Q of 69 (omg) he has one Q78 att and then not much else. He must be an impressive tactical manager :)

I'm getting a bit repetitive about this - I've won another custom cup. It was Div 5 & 6 only but most of the competitors were in Div 4 (or 3 in National Leagues). Played the final against FC Badaboom who has a higher Q team than me but he wasn't logged on for a 64 team cup. He beat me in the game but I beat him on the scoresheet :)

There are eight of the 17 Aussies still in the league cup after Round Two. It was actually 13 that survived the first round as I counted the win of Red Star Belgrade whereas RED STAR BELGRADE FC lost.

The teams in Round Three are:
Galacticos - South cardiff Gunners - Wellington Phoenix FC - Raiders FC - Srennug Lanesra - Blood_Hunters - Illawarra Dragons - Hobart Hackers.

My Div 3 opponent was unattended so I won 5-0. There are five Aussies left after Round Four:
Wellington Phoenix FC - Raiders FC - Srennug Lanesra - Hobos United - Hobart Hackers

The draw hasn't been as nice to me this time :) A div 3 team with a lot of Q85+ players so hopefully this time I don't have to worry about the League Cup and can concentrate on my Dep't. The two last Singleton boys are out and I'm jealous :D

pictureYou either think I'm a benchmark or an easy win for your team? Well the way I see it is that there are about five or six sides that are competing to get one finals spot :) And I don't think I'm the favourite out of those :) In saying that I know it will be an outsider that comes up as they have done in the past (tup) (including both finalists last season :))

I've dropped to third position as my defence has become somewhat of a ineffective sieve :( 9 goals in four games and 4-3 and 2-3 wins in the last two games :) My team has taken the attitude of just scoring more than the opposition rather than stopping the opposition :)

I paid 80mill for my striker to dominate and that is what I expect him to do :) My real team problem is that the second striker position  could possibly be a Q81 20yo with low flair (or inconsistent flair), a Q80 26yo with high flair, and a Q80 23yo with medium to high flair. By flair I mean the regularity they score goals and I have concentrated on the younger player who doesn't score many goals - hence the reliance on one striker. The thing with the younger player is that he won't score for four games and then get a hattrick.

Now, I wonder if there is any way of deleting custom cup results? For your sake as much as mine Robo :D

pictureWhat a shocking two days with semi-finals :( (mad) (or to be more precise the games before the Grand Final) On Friday night the Magpies lost by 5 points in a thriller to Geelong and then I lost to jm in the semi final of the Aussie Open IV and then Australia lost the semi-final of the twenty20 World Cup finals to India by 16 runs. Today I watched Melbourne Storm wondering how they could lose their preliminary final. Even with five minutes left I was wondering how they could lose it but thankfully the video ref came to their rescue and I finally saw a semi-final/preliminary final win that I wanted to see (tup)

I've updated the Aussie ladder but haven't done the Aussie Open IV blog yet :( I've collated the data but my efforts have stalled from there :(

pictureWell I've slipped into first but I'm going in with crazy tactics against the third place tonight. It is away so I guessed I would lose anyway but if I win then I should win big :D

Keep it going jm. It looks like there will be two Aussie Opens next season so if you want to beat Robo and myself again then you will have to be in Div 3 or 4 :)

pictureWell done jm. You are good at beating other Aussies so I think you should definitely transfer to the national league :) I'm four points clear in first place now ... It is kind of pointless as I'm transferring to the Australia League :o Hopefully I'll get the trophy though :D

And I've got an unassailable lead so i WIN my department!!! Still undecided whether to go to the Aussie League though :(

pictureWell I just beat 2nd place so I'm 7 points clear with a bot team in the last round. Not unassailable but as good as :D (hopefully :)). I've already got Australia locked in and I'm not going back on it. There will be a bit more of a challenge in Div 3 Int'l next season but then we should be aiming to play against Jake, ddude, Nexus, The K Man, etc in Div 1 in three seasons time :) My personal feeling is that you'll be missing the boat if you stay in Int'l Robo :( We should be in Div 2 in Season 29 and the rewards from that should be enough to entice you. If Spinner does make corrections to the economy then I think it would be across the board in all leagues so it would be harder to survive in the Int'l league. Just my thoughts :)

picturePersonally though i believe i could make it to DIV 2 after next season...:p which means a double promotion! simply because the fellow who came 1st in my department is or last time i checked winning the department and i could beat him! just not the bogey teams the other season :( but still Aussie League... ahhh!

pictureYeah that is where I probably shouldn't leave. I have a lot of 20yos so going to a half bot dept won't really help their progression. I've done all the hard work in Int'l because I didn't think we would have an Aussie league this soon :) At least I'll be able to concentrate on giving my second tier players match time (tup)
My striker is still piling on the goals but Jake's still has his nose in front. Mine has scored 41 league and 39 cup goals and Jake's has 82 goals all up (two more in league :() Still the second best total goals (as far as I can tell) in Int'l isn't that bad :o

pictureNo Dep't cups next season jm (tup) I've had some Q jumps recently :) I'm starting to put a Q81 team on the park and next season I won't need my old defender for most games so I should have all Q80+ players in my team by halfway through next season :) I might have to clean out the schrapnel but then I won't be able to buy the lower quality players :(
