Dutch clubs should remain Dutch! (08/11/2006 19:02)

No, this is not a blog to announce that a Russian billionair has taken over a Dutch club or so. This blog is to inform you on the latest worries, shared by 'Der Kaiser' Franz Beckenbauer, Johan Cruijff and Marco van Basten (and many others as well, I guess).

A couple of days ago, Beckenbauer wrote in his column in Bild (a German newspaper) that he was worried that German clubs do not use enough German players, instead they use foreigners which are of less quality according to "Becky".
He's aiming for a 6 + 5 rule, which means 6 players with the nationality of the league they play in (e.g. 6 Germans in Bundeslige, 6 Dutchmen in Dutch Eredivisie, 6 Englishmen in Premiership) and 5 foreigners. A while before this, Johan Cruijff and Marco van Basten opted for this idea as well, just like Sepp Blatter - head of FIFA.

To give you some examples:
In Germany,  Schalke04 use an average of 2,6 Germans in their starting line-up. No less than 12 out of 18 clubs in Germany use less than (an average of) 4,8 Germans in their line-ups. A high score for Alemannia Aachen and Arminia Bielefeld with an average line-up of 7,2 Germans.

In Holland, it's a bit better: Although Roda JC use an average of 2,9 Dutchmen in their starting line-up, followed by Dutch gigant PSV (3,5) and SC Heerenveen (3,9); only 5 out of 18 clubs use less than 5 Dutchmen in their line-ups. A high score for NAC Breda who have an average of 9,4.

But still, the 'Dutch gigants' are also opting for a 6 + 5 rule.

I think I agree with this rule, because you'll be sure your youth academy has to go on and 'produce' excellent youthplayers that can play in your squad.. Therefore, the national team will be one of the best as well...

But, what do you think?!?!? Tell me!

pictureFifa was talking about this some time back, don`t know has happened since.
I think it`s great idea, if there`s only foreigners on the teams the supporters will lose interest.

pictureI disagree. Good players can be found anywhere, and limiting a team to who they can pay to play for them based on a quota system will be a harsh limitation. People support their home team, not because the players are local, but because the team is good. Now, I could see putting this into effect for junior level and 16-20 teams, but limiting top-class teams from drawing top-class players is wrong.

My 2 credits. Feel free to disagree.

I also disagree. I want to watch good fotball, and the best fotball is played with the best players.

You don't say why becky is worried, so there are really no arguments.

Why not limit it to players from the team town (local players) then?

pictureBeckenbauer says that the foreigners playing in Germany atm, have no extra value (well, some do obviously, like Roy Makaay or Rafael vd Vaart - Yay for Holland, lol) rather then German players. So therefor, he's opting to let Germans play instead of the foreigners (who might be cheaper, but that shouldn't matter).

pictureAlso, if EVERY team has to work with the 6+5 rule, clubs do not really need classy players at that particular moment, but can build up their teams, as everybody has to do that... So, it's rather fair imo...

pictureIndeed, but there also many many others who are even worse than the average youth players in Germany (in Holland as well by the way). So, a limit is not a bad idea I guess...

pictureToday I read an article about research done in Belgium. (Especially for african players some sort of a safe haven)
Apparantly foreign players had no positive effect on football there. Obiously, there's also the financial aspect to worry about.

pictureI think large clubs should use more money on developing young local talents, and a rule like that might be the only way to realise this.

This has been discussed for quite some time now, but it will never be implemented. One of the basic elements of the European Union is free exchange of labour, so it  would be against the law of the EU to limit the number of foreign players, at least as long as they are from the EU or have a dual citizenship. Any club that disagree with the agreement could take this to a EU-court and win.

Well, UEFEA and others sports federations is working towards an agreement withe the EU Comission to recognize that sports are an special case and give then an special treatment in this situation, and the FIFA regulation that it comes goes in the same way

pictureI agree. like the best players go to England spain or Italy...
now take for Example Ruud Van Nistelrooy... is he is forced to stay in Holland.. 1 club will take psv coz he came from there
got a world class striker... and on that hand PSV will preform beter in the Champions League.. in that way all the teams are gonna be more equal to eachother.. and makes European Club Football alot more intresting

pictureTo be fair, forcing teams to have at least 6 national players would... balance the whole game more. Without the season having started you just know that:
a) Chelsea will win the premier league or at least become second, Man Utd will prolly become 2nd or win it.
b) Bayern Munich will win the Bundesliga
c) PSV will win the dutch league.
d) Barcelona will win primera division, or Real Madrid will.

I won't even start about the champions league. For years it's the same 5-6 clubs who reach the semi's. What do all these teams have in common? They just buy and buy and buy and buy... foreign players.

Smaller teams from smaller countries will lose all their quality players to the big teams with money. Take a look at England, they've got one of the strongest competitions in the world. But their national team is... well... not good.

Stimulating clubs to use national players, will balance the european football in general and in the end only raise the quality of play i think.

pictureI'm glad so many ML-managers have thought about this so far. But I want more reactions! :)
