In Holland we have this saying, 'better late then never' (literally translated), so therefore I'm rather convinced that my opinion about the last World Cup Championship in Germany is still readable ;)
As I am Dutch, I might discuss a couple of things, like exiting/refreshing teams, Dutch influences in the Cup and any other thing to be mentioned, with a critical footnote...
Some (remarkable) facts:
- Ronaldo (Luis Nazario de Lima) has become overall topscorer in the World Cup Championships after scoring 3 goals in 2006. With his 5th minute shooter in Brasil's quarter finals against Ghana he scored his 15th goal in the world's most famous and important Cup.
- English top referee Graham Poll lost his mind somehow in the match of Croatia against Australia by giving three (!) yellow cards to Simunic before finally giving the red card.
- Russian top referee Vladimir Ivanov needed only 16 yellow cards (which made 4 players be sent off the field) in the quarter final of Portugal against Holland.
- German striker Miroslav Klose scored another 5 goals this Championship, just like in 2002.
- Best goalkeeper was Gianluigi Buffon (Italy), best youngster was Lukasz Podolski (Germany)
- The Dutch supporters have been awarded by the FIFA to be the best supporters this World Cup. With all their exitement, happiness and everything that makes every country love Dutch supporters, you can say -without any doubts whatsoever- that WE are the best supporters IN THE WORLD!!!
- Suprisingly enough, the best player of the World Cup was a player who played like sh*t in the early rounds, until the quater finals against Spain. Yes, I am talking about France's superstar Zinedine Zidane. After scoring in the 90th minute (France's 3rd goal), everybody admitted that Zinedine finally found his way of playing again (sorry, have no clue to put this anyway else).
After giving the final pass to Thierry Henry (who didn't play that well this CUp, as nearly everyone expected him to do) in the semi finals, he scored a 'Panenka' in the finals against Italy... Unlucky for him, Materazzi first scored the 1-1 and later on "relegated" him with a red card. This red card though was more obvious then ever, concerning a head-butt by Zidane (http://images.fok.nl/upload/060709_50242_zinedinezidane.gif).
After his sending off, France lost the penalty shoot-out... Italy became World Champion's for -at least- the coming 4 years...
So far, just the facts... But what about my own opinion? What did I think of this World Cup? Well, to be honest, I didn't like it that much... I'm a big fan of everything concerning football -that's why I play online manager games as well-, but the level showed in this World Cup is frightening me... I'm getting worried about the future; teams use only defending tactics only, hardly anything creative happens and scoring goals seems to be harder then anytime before! (Luckily, Argentinia was capable to defeat Serbia and Montenegro with 6-0) Also, creative players were never capable of showing their remarkable skills. Their coaches either kept them on the bench (Robinho); promised Joga Bonito, but never showed it (Brasil - Ronaldinho); chose a squad which would never be able to continue to further rounds (Poland) or made mistakes in matches themselves, which made them lose (Holland for example, but many more as well). All these matters showed that creative players can't do everything on their own, they need help. Call them 'servants' if you please, or 'helpers' which sounds a bit more friendly, but Zidane, Ronaldinho, Henry, Van Nistelrooy and all the others would have showed their skills much more if they gained all the help (and maybe respect?) from their team mates.
I have to add one more thing, before I leave this blog for a while, and continue doing other (important?) things:
I'm very pleased to see that Italy, although I didn't want them to become Champions on the first hand, played some nice games. Finally, they didn't just play defence as always, but find they abilties to attack as well! I was very pleased to see that. And obviously, the same counts for Germany, who will have suprised the complete world too!
After the World Cup had finished, some "actors" have been made into little stars, with best actor Christiano Ronaldo as it's supreme star: http://www.motherlondon.com/divingwinker/
And as I am quite busy at the moment as well, I will add several addings to this blog more often... So this blog will not be ended until I say it is! ;) (lol)
