Details about Champions League <--Back
pic
In the real world, Champions League is the tournament where Europes best teams come together to find out which club is the best one.
Only the top teams from each country may enter, and some countries need to play qualification rounds even to get 1 team into the main tournament.
Some league have more teams in it than others (like England, Spain and Italy to mention a few), based on the overall quality of the league and, of course,
based on what UEFA thinks will generate the most intrest (money) for the tournament.

Here in ManagerLeague, the setup is fairly identical, but with different number of teams entering from each league, as we have fewer leagues, non-european league, and a lot of teams from certain leagues.

What teams get to play Champions League?
As it stands now, and this could be changed, the top teams from each league gets to play. The number of teams per league vary from 2 to 6, based on the number of human players in each league, and the level of competition in the league. If you look at the tables-page in the game, and go up to the top division, you will see the teams marked with a * will enter next years Champions League. Here is the current list:

International: 6 teams
Norway: 6 teams
Sweden: 4 teams
England: 5 teams
Romania: 5 teams
Spain: 4 teams
Portugal: 5 teams
Poland: 4 teams
USA: 3 teams
Australia: 2 teams
Croatia: 2 teams
Brazil: 3 teams
Italy: 3 teams
Malaysia: 2 teams
Turkey: 3 teams
Netherlands: 3 teams
Belgium: 2 teams
Denmark: 2 teams

Does this mean Champions League is just for teams from the top division?
Yes, it does. It is called CHAMPIONS LEAGUE for a reason.

Are there special sponsor-bonuses for qualifying for Champions League?
There are bonuses, but not from the sponsors.
There is one bonus for qualifying, one bonus for surviving the group-stage (read below) and of course the prize for winning it is substancial!

When are the Champions League matches played?
All Champions League matches will be played at 18:00 game-time, on some weekdays. The schedule and the fixture-list will show them accordingly.
Here is the list showing in what league-rounds they will be played: ("Early in Round 4 means just after league match #3")
CL 1: Early in round #4 (Tuesday 18:00)
CL 2: Early in round #6 (Wednesday 18:00)
CL 3: Early in round #8 (Thursday 18:00)
CL 4: Early in round #10 (Friday 18:00)

CL 5: Early in round #12 (Monday 18:00)
CL 6: Early in round #14 (Tuesday 18:00)
CL 7: Early in round #16 (Wednesday 18:00)
# No games on thursday due to changing to knock-out rounds
CL 8: Early in round #20 (Friday 18:00) (Knockout stage 1)

CL 9: Early in round #22 (Monday 18:00) (Quarter Finals)
CL 10: Early in round #24 (Tuesday 18:00) (Semi finals)
CL 11: Early in round #28 (Thursday 18:00) (Finals)

Tournament Setup
Champions League is split into two different stages.
The Group Stage
The 64 teams in the tournament, are split into 8 groups of 8 teams.
Each team will play the other 7 teams in the group once.
Allthough played at one of the teams home stadium, it is important to know that there is no home-team advantage in these games, and the income is split equally between the teams.
After each of these group-stage games, the Chammpions League page (under Cups in the menu) will be updated showing the group-tables.
When all group-stage matches have been played, the top 2 teams will go on to the next stage.
In this stage, matches can end with a draw.

Please note: If team #2 and #2 (and maybe even #4 and #5) have the same amount of points, and the same goal-difference, and the same number of scored goals, we draw one of these teams at random to promote to the next stage. Internal results between the teams are not considered. The involved teams will get a message about promoting / getting knocked out by a draw.

The knock-out stage
16 teams enter the knock-out stage of Champions League, 2 from each group.
Each match in this stage is a "winner-proceeds to the next round, loser is out of the cup".
These matches are played in a special stadium for this occasion, no home-team advantage is in effect, and the income is split between the teams.
In this stage, matches can NOT end with a draw, and will, if needed, use both extra time and penalty shootout to find a winner.
After each such match, the fixtures for the next round of the tournament are created.

The finals
The finals are played in a special stadium as well, which is the largest stadium in all of ManagerLeague.

Other questions
Do players gain more experience from CL then from normal matches??
Yes they do, but keep in mind, this isn't talk of a lot of matches...

Do cards from the CL count in the normal league?
Yes, and this is important:
Champions League share "cards" with the normal league. This means that banned players will not play the CL-Match either.
And a player getting a ban after a CL-match can not play the next league-match, but may play the next CL-Match.
This has been implemented on purpose to avoid confusion on what kind of matches he is banned from, for the sake of simplicity and ease of use.

Does the league cup champion qualify for the CL?
No, it does not.

How many leagues will play CL? Malaysian and the other uneuropean countrys to?
Yes, all leagues in ManagerLeague will have teams in Champions League.

Do I have to pay taxes from the champions League bonuses?
Yes, you do. The taxman is relentless in his work!

Will there be any seeding of the teams??.........before making the groups...?
No, there is no seeding involved. The only thing we avoid is to put two teams from the same league in the same group.
As the leagues themselves are unbalances, seeding would be somewhat troublesome

pictureWell, it can be #1 , #2 and #3 and so on, but the case is the same.
And if it's a draw beteen #1 and #2 only, it really does not matter, as both proceed to the knock-out round....

pictureI think that, after the first CL competition, you must use the club points that win in this competition (last 5 years) for the next year qualifyning number of teams in the leagues selection. Like the same as reality.

it'sQ-blindness syndrome....

there are many other factors: age, tactics, team stats, band and injuries, manager's skills, fitness etc. which will tell which team is betterWinky

picturemmmmmm....
So in the worst case scenario we could end up having the 8 best teams in the hole game in one group? Think you should at least think of making some kind of seeding.
Maybe based on CL-places? #1 in a league with 6 CL-places can not be in a group with #1 from a different league with 6 places....? Or something like that
Even a simple seeding based on last seasons league-placement would be better than nothingWinky

By : SpinnerSeeding..   13:07 07/04 2008
pictureWith todays leagues, and their relative strengths, no, that is not a realistic scenario.
As no teams from Norway end up in the same group, and with no teams from the International league in the same group, no dutch teams in the same group, etc, it will not be a huge difference between the groups. The only 2 groups that might be "easier" than the others are the two groups that will NOT get a Norwegian team in them. Then again, those groups get more #1 players form other leagues, so it might balance out, more or less.
With growing leagues, these numbers will change, and so the groups will differ a lot from season to season. We will also adjust these numbers if we have started out wrongly.
